Well everything so far looks good for a Thursday morning departure in the Metro. If there is someone who wouldn't mind updating this thread about my progress from text messages from me, that would be great. Just PM me your number. For the newer folks, it's not a Geo, it's a 1965 IH Metro van.
Good luck with your travels. Be safe. There's a little food stand in my home that's pretty famous: I don't know what kind of truck this is, I suppose I'll have to look next time I'm there.
That Metro is SO COOL!!!! I envy you on that trip, Freek! Good luck to you. Wait...what about this weather?? That thing have a GOOD heater?? I'm serious....it's gonna be COLD Thursday and beyond!
Eagle Freek, for the next couple of days I want to BE you. That old truck will get you home. If something breaks, you'll know what to do. I'm not on your route, so all I can offer are best wishes. Roll on.
Hey Freek, I would be happy to relay for you but I don't know anything about texting?? If you want to call me I will relay but I'm sure others can receive text messages. If you can't find a texter...let me know and I will do it with you the old fashioned way!
OK, Freek....I've been thinking and worrying about this for a couple of days now and I really wish you would reconsider the timing of your trip. It's going to be snowing and blowing up until Thursday. You are going to have huge drifts all over the place including the highways and the temp is going to drop like a rock. That 'ol Metro may be tough but it ain't a magic carpet. Sit back and take notice. A few days delay won't hurt you and will surely help you. No sense freezing to death in a ditch some where. Wait till the roads are cleaned up and the weather has settled down. This is the WORST time to be thinking about a trip. Especially in an oldie but goodie that will get blown around the highway like a kite. Please think about it.
Thanks silverfox, I'll let you know. It has a heater core and a fan that comes on but it is quite archaic. I don't want to mess with it right now and cause a potential problem. I'll just bundle up if I have to.
Ummm....did you read my SECOND post right above yours? Regarding the weather and your trip??? I posted it just after my texting post.
Being a CO iceman, you probably know where to get those warm, insulated mechanics coveralls, right? Take a winter road emergency kit with candles, flares, etc. You'll probably see some lady stuck in a snowbank and want to help her out. From this Manitoba Winter Road Safety document (PDF). We have Ice Roads on lakes and rivers to transport goods to the North. Even with all the info broadcast everywhere, we still find people frozen in a ditch in the Spring. http://www.gov.mb.ca/mit/winter/pdf/wintersafety.pdf And as Red Green would say, Keep your stick on the ice.
I say....don't even GO now! Wait a few days, at least. Wait until the roads are clear and the cold snap recedes. Thursday is when the temp is supposed to drop big time. No sense taking unnecessary chances.
Thanks for your concern. According to weather.com my route is going to be sunny and clear. It will be cold but I don't mind that too much. I was planning on making it a 2 day trip and sleeping in the Metro but I might have to find a cheap dive hotel if it's too cold. It was in the minuses last night and is about 1* right now but will be warming up tomorrow. I would love to wait but I have to get back to TN and don't want to chance more snow coming through here. I have good insulated clothing my previous job had me working outside sometimes in this stuff.
