Wagons in vintage Street scenes

On that, if no one has yet read them, Tom Wolfe's "The Right Stuff" and NBC NASA correspondent Jay Barbree's autobiography "Live From Cape Canaveral" are two very good books about the space program, "The Right Stuff" about the beginnings and selection of the Mercury Seven, and Barbree telling how he went from a local radio station to NBC News, reporting on all Cape launches till his forced retirement, and sometimes being in on what the astronauts were doing that could get them in trouble. I also highly recommend Tom Hanks' HBO series "From the Earth to the Moon," about the Apollo program and everything that preceded it.

 

Fun car fact about the original Apollo astronauts: Chevrolet made a special lease deal for each Apollo family, $1 per year for two new cars. The astronauts generally got a new Corvette, and the wives got station wagons. Obviously, this was a huge promo for the car company.

Us poor folks in the midwest stayed home and worked while driving our VW's and Rambler Americans to the factory.

 

In 67/68 in my area of the country you did see VW's and a few British Cars, along with some Fiats, but no Japanese Cars what so ever.
