Aw come on. The dash is easy. If I can do it without a book you can too. The thing doesn't weigh much. If Andy helps it will be a walk in the park! The key is balance and that first screw on the upper side close to the windshield. The rest is just screws and bolts. It took me an hour and a half to get it bolted all back in and that included the upside down support brace forward of the glove box. You and Andy should have it done in a hour including the coffee break.
I was trying to justify the trip down. We're a good tag-team on the road and almost got our black-belt in Dashes! Would have been nice to see one of the last, live Cougar wagons, and meet you face to face.
I think there are more out there. I've seen 5 now in the last couple of years on egay (Rev's term). I've never seen another in person. You'd think out of a total of 19,254 there'd be more around. Really though I couldn't sell it. I've become attached. But, money talks . Your squire is a whole lot better than mine now that you've done your tricks. I'm still amazed at the salt and vinegar rust removal. Amazing, although I have none of that on mine. It kills me though that Andy's Fairmont is toast. Gone to rust and a lousy accident. What a shame. Here's a decent link for Cougar wagons. A small following with good links for the 77's at least. http://www.cougarsw.flacarshows.com/index.htm
WOW! I found the mother of Wood moulding solutions thanks to that site! Stripeman has a refinishing overlay kit for the woodgrain mouldings! The Truckster guys and I know how many hours there are in that job, but this is awesome! Bottom of the page - called Trim Moulding Cover Up. $99 is a gift! Probably still have the preparation and cleanup, but then you've got a proper laminated covering - hiding aluminum dings and scratches, etc. http://www.stripeman.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=WGD
I've never looked at it but this actually makes a HHR look good! http://www.stripeman.com/Merchant2/...OD&Product_Code=HHR579&Category_Code=FEATURED
Sorry to hear the news on the wagon, Andy. At least you've got a spare, eh? And yes, come down to AZ if you want a good project wagon and spare for the spare with zero, zip, zilch, nada, nein, nyet rust. Then, with the simple addition of an external rollcage, thus making the Fairmont "nose job proof", you'll be ready for the next leisurely drive. A roof deployable 50mm cannon, a la Iraqi contractor Suburban, would be a swell touch too. Call it the Fearmont. -MP
:2_thumbs_up_-_anima I like it. If I get to make my parts car into a dragster, that's what I'll call it! I finalized my deal with our state-controlled insurer today. I get a check for around $1250, and I keep the car. But they won't allow it on the road again, the bastards. The guy was really apologetic, "I saw your Fairmont out there again today, and it looked great, but you know those fox-bodies, they just rust out too much to be repaired." So if I ever want to drive it again, it'll have to be towed to the track by Mabel. And I've got StorminNorman's Mexican 302 block, just waiting to get built and see some horsepower.
We've got lots of members building the Lampoon Truckster. With all that rust (floor level), I can see a Flintstone potential! Two on the floor with overhead laces!
Norman, you mentioning the Family Truckster gives me another idea, (how could I have not thought of this earlier!) In the movie when Clark and Rusty go to pick up the car at Lou Glutz, Clark looks at the Truckster with measured disgust, and says "Ed, I distinctly ordered the Antarctic blue Super Sports Wagon with CB and the optional Rally Fun Pack. This isn't even the right model." And later, Beverly D'Angelo says "I thought we were getting the little Sports thing." And then Clark says "Nah, I changed my mind, and besides, the Sports wagon was too small." Now I saw that movie in the theater, and from that moment, I have always pictured the Super Sports Wagon as a Fairmont. Building that Fairmont as the never seen SSW would be a natural, you could do a similar wood treatment on the sides and hood, smaller crown emblems, two sets of quad Futura headlights, lowered sectioned bumper, similar grille treatment, really a smaller version of the Truckster in medium metallic blue. And don't forget the CB and Rally Fun Pack. The potential for epic greatness is almost too good to pass up. -MP
He's looking for place to put his almost blue-printed 302. So far his boat was gonna be home for it, but you may have sparked his revival!
I never thought about the alternate car before. Too bad the producers only came up with the Truckster. Somebody has just going to have to make one! That would be too cool, eh?
It was never shown in the movie, only hinted at, so one could take some artistic license in building one. -MP
