Yes, you should be disappointed, the Olds 307 is a pig, period
Any other Buick, Olds or Pontiac will bolt into the car and to your existing transmission as long as you have all the correct for the engine accessory brackets and exhaust manifolds.
A Caddy 500 would be nice!

I always found it comical that "back in the day" when GM started these incestuous practices folks who bought Oldsmobiles and got Chevrolet power were pissed.

Those wouldn't run long enough at a single stretch to burn an entire tank of fuel so consumption would've been tough to measure.

Hmmm. You're probably right. I've only seen one variable displacement Caddy, and the solenoids were all gone.

It's been about six months now since I bought my '87 Caprice Estate wagon with the 307. While I do tend to drive like the stereotypical grandmother with my classic cars, I will say I do find the 307 a bit disappointing with regards to power; considering my reference points are earlier model Caprices with nothing smaller than a 350.

The good news is that as many people point out, a 403 will drop right in and mount up perfectly, transmission TV cables and all.

BTW, question: My valve covers are black but in my earlier Caprices (350's circa the 70's) they were painted orange. What color would they have been originally from the factory on an Olds 307 in a Chevy wagon?

True, I did see that. I'm not gutsy enough to swap out an engine though. I'm also too much of a purist to remove the original. It might not have the pep of the 350s/400's I had in the past, but with the type of driving I do I'm still okay with it.

    Black.
I'm guessing since the Chevy engines are black after '82.

If I'm wrong somebody will correct me, the truth always prevails on the interwebs.:D

valve covers would have been "corporate blue", as all GM engines were in those days. No more Chevy orange, Pontiac blue(which is pretty close to corp. blue), Buick red, gold Oldsmobiles or Cadillac blue

Not sure what year GM cheeped out and went to black for all it's engines but I can say my 83 Chev 305, 82 307 Olds, and my 87 307 Olds anything and everything under the hood is black from the factory

^^^THIS. Every single Olds 307 was painted black. Corporate blue went away sometime around 1980 or 81.

I stand corrected about the corporate blue. I'm often accused of being stuck in the seventies, this is more evidence.

As an aside but Oldsmobile related; A friend offered me an Olds 350 block(casting # 3955582) for free. It has been tanked and honed(not a good job to my eyes) but left to sit unprotected so has surface rust.
Anyone near me in Chicago who wants to it for a door stop, coffee table or to actually build can have it, free, with a PM.
