Do I solemnly swear to tell the facts and nothing but the facts??? Yep. Didn't mean to confuse you. I didn't damage the original paint the way I did it, with the Lepage's Poly Strippa, but then I didn't care about the old paint, since I was repainting the whole car anyway. Mine had 28 years of 'ouch' dents and pinhole rust (pimples) that I had to repair. Good effective picture.
I just dont want to have to repaint the car before I put the new vinyl on....... maybe the sanding the old and laying the new vinyl isn't such a bad idea....
The Rev and Silverfox are right. use the decal remover instead. It might be pricey, but the alternate is much more. The adhesive remover wasn't working for me, because mine was baked in by the Mexican sun for so long. No matter what, its a patience job. $100 in decal remover or tons more dollars in paint and primer repair. I didn't care and I got the feel for using my method, but after hours of other prep work on my project. You're launching right into a final appearance step without learning how your paint really really is. Honest, do like the Rev and SF recommend. You'll feel more confident about it, and it'll turn out well.
Hi... glad to see another AMCer,, we might have passed at the AMC 2009 Nat's in St. Louis.(we had vendor setup).. Looks like a extreme fun project you got going!.. Ive been around the block 4 decades with AMCs, if I can help on this project just give a shout. PS: are you going to MI to the 2010 AMC Nat'ls.?
Found some of the kleen strip decal remover. It was about half the cost of the 3M woodgrain Vinyl remover. I will try a little area this week and see if it worksas well as the 3M gold in a can..
