Yeah, I tried to buy that wagon from your Dad probably a dozen years ago... He never even considered it... If I remember correctly he had two of them in that storage garage. One was REALLY rusted. After a few years I finally found another one and bought it. We'd run into each other every now and then and always talk about the wagons. I remember the first time I saw his on the road, I was at the car wash washing the car and looked up to see someone had blocked the exit with their car. Then I actually LOOKED and saw that it was another 66/67 Tempest wagon! It always cracked me up, the scarcity of these wagons and there were two in the same town. And I appreciate the confidence you have in me Silverfox, I hope I can live up to it.
Hey. Yea I know eric had a got 2 door gold with rusted on the rear pass side and he let me drive that around town in cocoa bch I was there one summer. It was cool driving it. Iam sorry about your dad, very nice wagon, but can anyone show me a picture what these looked like when they came out, because i love that gto frontend on there
Thanks I don't know what they look like when they came out. I think there's diffrent kinds that came out
I like it. I keep thinking theres got to be a way to give the rear a distinctively "1966 GTO" look. I wonder what it would look like if the tail light bezels were body color and each lens was bisected vertically with a narrow chrome strip to somewhat mimic the appearance of the 66 GTO's horizontal tail lights. Then maybe remove the "Pontiac' and "G T O" lettering from the tail gate and replace the "Pontiac" lettering in the center with slightly larger "G T O" letters, or ... or maybe leave the "GTO" lettering where it is on the tailgate and leave the tail light bezels alone, but add six chrome strips on the tailgate to represent the 66 GTO's tail light trim. The chrome strips could be mounted vertically as done on the classic Pontiac Safari wagons and some other Pontiac wagons, or they could be mounted horizontally (three on the left and three on the right) to mimic the 66 GTO's chrome tail light trim. Your wagon looks great just as it is, so you can ignor my rambling suggestions and its still a great car.
The Tempest wagon basically looked just like this, but without the hood scoop. That and the grill inserts were a little different and the GTO had the turn signals in the grill, but the flat hood was the major difference. Differences between the GTO and the Tempest were mostly in the drive-train. You could get a Tempest with the 326, but in '66 the GTO came with a 389. While you could order a 2bbl 'economy' model, it was pretty rare.
