This one is for you Andrew:

    USS Triton Sail Park.

We had to take Nathaniel to the Tri Cities for a Doctor's appointment. They were running a series of tests and would only allow one parent to go back with him. So Jennifer stayed with him and Caleb and I decided to go exploring. I can't remember if I knew this was here before or not, but I was looking for something interesting to do for the hour plus we had and when I came across this I knew we had to go and check it out!

    Per Wikipedia:
USS Triton (SSRN/SSN-586) was a United States Navy radar picket nuclear submarine. In early 1960, it became the first vessel to execute a submerged circumnavigation of the Earth in Operation Sandblast.

After the USS Triton was decommissioned it was sent to Bremerton Naval yard for recycling. Unfortunately the historic vessel wasn't saved. Thankfully there was someone in a decision making position that decided that the sail should be saved in order to commemorate the Triton, her crew and their accomplishments.

    IMG_3649.JPG

I know it's only a fraction of the size of the entire vessel, but I was still struck by it's magnitude!

It was very impressive to see in person. I'm glad we went to see it.

Ah, very cool, I did not know it had been saved. In Honolulu in 1989, there was an empty lot next to the Arizona Memorial boat landing. I believe this became the USS Bowfin Museum. But at that time, there were a few submarine relics in that empty lot, and one was a WWII sub conning tower, fully outfitted. I may have pics in storage, but I climbed inside, ducked my head, and marvelled at the technology of the 1940s.

Boys doing some pre-trip maintenance on the Freestyle.

Nathaniel manned the air chuck and Caleb monitored the progress with the tire gauge.

Travels of the Freestyle! Not as glam as the Fury, but there you have it. Where are you guys headed? It’s good to get your pit crew involved. Looks like you’ll have good weather.

Hahaha good one! I actually took that photo last week as we were preparing to head over the mountains to Seattle. Jennifer had an appointment at U.W. Medicine. We're actually going to be over there again this coming week for three days. She has one appointment a day. I still can't go in with her, so while she's in her appointments the boys and I will be on the look out for more adventures and "Travels of the Freestyle" :thumbs2:

You ought to head over to Magnuson Park (former Sandpoint NAS/NS). There's a museum for Sandpoint's history, IIRC.

MOHAI is top on our list. We have tried to go there a number of times, but it was always closed. First due to the statewide closures, and then it was by appointment only (which we didn't realize at the time). I think the last time we attempted to go it was on one of the weekdays it was closed :slap:

Next time I get to Washington, I'm heading down there. I went to the old MOHAI back when I was in third grade, along with the Burke Museum, on a field trip, in Springtime 1974. Oh, and Dad, as a Naval Reservist in the late Forties, mustered there when that was the Naval Reserve Center Seattle.

Is the 3"/50 gun that used to be at the old MOHAI installed there at the new one?

There were no guns outside of the MOHAI when we attempted to visit.

I just discovered the Burke on our last trip. It's a brand new building and they haven't had a full opening since they were just prepared to when the shut down happened. Sounds like they are ramping up to full scale operations.

I’m sure the guns were removed cause hunters were using them for deer season. Do your deer wear Kevlar vests?

No. They wouldn't work against a 3" VT antiaircraft round.
