Honda Prelude Shooting Brake Fixes Our Biggest Problem with the Coupe

The Prelude Is Easy to Like, Until You Climb Into the Back

Honda deserves credit for resurrecting the Prelude badge with style. The new hybrid coupe is comfortable, polished, and – thanks to its dialed-in chassis and that nifty S+ Shift – way more fun than you’d expect.

But it’s far from perfect. Honda calls the Prelude a 2+2, but while your knees might survive a short stint in the back, your head is another matter. That swoopy roofline means rear passengers are basically brushing their hair against the glass. Even at 5-foot-6, I won’t call dibs on the back seat for anything longer than a coffee run.

The sloped roof also cramps your cargo. Sure, the Prelude is technically a hatchback with folding seats, but good luck stacking anything tall without playing Tetris against the rear glass.

Enter Theottle’s rendering, which immediately grabbed our attention for all the right reasons.

A Long Roof Prelude Looks Surprisingly Natural

Created as a digital rendering, this Honda Prelude Shooting Brake takes the coupe’s roof and drags it out toward a proper upright hatch. The transformation is subtle enough to keep the Prelude DNA, but bold enough to flip the car’s proportions on their head.

From the front, it’s business as usual: slim LED headlights, tidy fascia, and those clean lines. But get past the B-pillar, and things start to get interesting.

The stretched roof gives the rear some real presence, but the Prelude’s sporty vibe is still intact. Black multi-spoke wheels, shadowy window trim, and a subtle roof spoiler keep it from veering into wagon territory. Instead, it sits somewhere between a hot hatch and a low-slung grand tourer.

Honestly, if Honda rolled this out as an official variant tomorrow, it would fit right in with the current lineup.

Shooting Brakes Simply Make More Sense

Shooting brakes have always been the oddballs we secretly love. They keep the coupe’s style but toss in enough practicality to make daily life less of a compromise. For the Prelude, that’s a recipe that fixes a lot of gripes.

Raise the rear roof, and suddenly back seat passengers can breathe again. The longer hatch means you can actually load up for a road trip, haul sports gear, or tackle a Costco run without breaking a sweat.

Honda’s no stranger to wild body styles, so who knows – maybe something like this could actually happen. If this rendering is any indication, we’d say it’s an idea worth revisiting.
