this is gonna be the begining of the dinner is supper and lunch is dinner thing ....i can feel it! soo fannie...when you say supper...are you talking about the meal eaten at or around noon? or the meal eaten around 5 or 6..(9 or 10 pm in florida)
I've been thru this so many times with others I just lose my appetitte and skip my supper which is the last big meal of the day....... as in LAST SUPPER. I'm from Illinois and we still called it BREAKFAST, LUNCH OR DINNER, then SUPPER. Seems like we called it lunch if we took our lunch to work or someplace. Dinners were at a house, often ours. Mostly, I don't care what ya call it. Just call me when it's ready! I do remember in school and at work carrying a LUNCH box or LUNCH sack. Never a dinner pail as some people called it! Danged I'm hungry! What's for lunch? Keeping on topic, we also called it that when in Michigan around Bewber's house.
Cat- I'm from Texas and that is exactly what we used to call them. This newer generation calls Supper Dinner now.:banghead3: My mom and dad always get confused when my son asks whats for Dinner at Supper time
With so many people eating junk food all times of the day, at fast food joints, I don't think most know which meal they are eating! It's more like sloppin the hogs all afternoon!
Relocating from RI/MA to OK in the last 2 years I just say is it time to eat or it's time to eat. I get busted on a lot less this way.
I went back and checked a few early posts on this thread. I believe it's been hi-jacked! But- bu-t but, in my Mel Tillis impersonation, I don't think I'm dead. I still feel tired and dizzy. To make it even more cornfusing some people go out for BRUNCH ! What's for dinner?
Well, for me dinner and supper are interchangable. They are usually a meal held late in the day. However, I have always felt that dinner was a more formal occasion as in, you have some guests over for Christmas dinner, served in the the diningroom. Supper can be any other occasion but not as formal. Perhaps you have a few friends over for supper then clear the table and have a game of cards...whatever. Either way I enjoy both of them. Sorry for the hi jack, but when will supper be ready Bewber? We already started on the beer.
Welcome Bewber! Thought you were already here! Seem to be running into you everywhere these days! Just finished dinner, thats what I grew up calling it here in Michigan... Got to thinking where did the term supper come from anyway? Wikipedia to the rescue: Supper is the name for the evening meal in some dialects of English - ordinarily the last meal of the day. Originally, in the Middle Ages, it referred to the lighter meal following dinner, where until the 18th century dinner was invariably eaten as the midday meal. The term is derived from the French souper, which is still used for this meal in Canadian French, Swiss French and sometimes in Belgian French. It is related to soup. It is also related to the German word for soup, Suppe. (The Oxford English Dictionary, however, suggests that the root, sup, retains obscure origins.)[1 Thought you'd want to know...
psychosid well I wanted to know and now I feel better knowing I am right. Of course, I am always right..................? So the question is what's for souper?
In Utard it's called "soda"? I spend half my time here trying to decifer what the hell these people are talking about. Sell or Cell= Sale Mouahns= mountains Layahn= Layton So you just pretty much remove the sound "t" makes and replace it with some unintelligeble jibberish. First lesson in speaking Utardese.
....and another thread hangs a sharp left with NO signals Brewbear ...or whatever someones gonna call you next
