When it comes to making movies, they really do not care a damn about what is good, what is ruined, or what may be saved. It is strictly a budget thing. Back in the 60s and 70s, I always knew what was going to be wrecked watching the shows based on the age of the vehicle. Just take a look at any episode of CHiPs or Emergency! Cheap was all that counted then and is all that counts now. That said, it is amazing the wrecks they can make look good on camera! The 'Hero' or rented cars are very carefully looked after. I know. It is often my job to watch the picture cars over night when nobody is around to make sure they stay carefully tended. A number of the picture car captains request me because they know I can often figure out how to make these old beasties go on a cold morning! The oldest car I ever had to watch was a 1907 Viking. Getting it to run first thing in the morning was interesting! Teaching the tow truck (flat bed) driver how to start a 41 Buick was different, too. He had no clue where the starter button was, nor that a lot of those old cars are positive ground.
