1988 Colony Park I forgot to take it out of first and did a pull, now my wagon is chugging quite a bit at low speeds... it shifts fine, all gears work but the shuddering/chugging at low rpm means something happened, what did i do
My 85 did the same thing, once you rule out transmission issues I had the intake manifold gaskets replaced, then did it again - valve cover gaskets I am no mechanic - lift the hood and stare at it with no idea what I'm looking at
Ive come to the conclusion that I friend my torque converter, thankfully nothing too serious. All I just need to know is what tc rpm stall I need to have
The TC doesn't lock up in first, especially A) if you 'load it' before launching; and B) if the rotor bearings fried in the TC, there would not be any car movement, IIRC. Something did get fried, I'm sure, but in doing what you did, I'm reasonably sure the TC did not bite it.
It gives all the symptoms of a bad tc, chugging at low rpm/speeds at idle and under throttle, the bad bearing noise, it does have 246,000 miles on it so it would make sense imo especially when I have been doing burnouts and launches quite a bit this week. (yes they were stupid acts to execute, but I couldn't contain my self.) But if it ISNT the tc, what on earth could be the problem?
Update, I've started the wagon to see if I missed anything. It has a rich smell and runs rough, almost as if a vacuum line came undone...
If it's rich, I'd look at the ECT, MAP and O2 sensor, as they directly affect air/fuel mixture. Plus, if an engine runs lean, the 'sickly-sweet' smell the converters give off can be misinterpreted as a rich condition. But since you mentioned a vacuum line problem, you're already on a 'look for lean condition' track. You can also spray carb cleaner to get the general area, then use a section of heater hose as a basic stethoscope.
i was reading all the posts waiting for my turn to talk and low and behold you took the words right outta my mouth. Hey mouse, when you blow that thing up I might be interested in buying some parts off it!
well i decided carb cleaner and smoke was a silly idea and used peptobismol instead, man my engine runs like new!! lol i didn't find any vac leaks with the cleaner, however my engine bay does look a whole lot less dusty now that I've emptied the can.
