The Toyota Crown was sold on and off in the U.S. from 1958 to 1972 before it returned in 2022 as a semi-luxury car positioned between Toyota and Lexus. The Crown sedan has crossover styling and reminds us of high-riding sedan crossovers, like the Volvo S60 Cross Country (sold here from 2015) and the Legacy-based Subaru SUS (Sport Utility Sedan) of the late ’90s.

The Crown Signia is easier to pigeonhole as a crossover wagon in the mold of the Volvo V60/V90 Cross Country station wagons and the Audi A4/A6 Allroad. So what are the main differences between the Crown and Crown Signia besides the fact that one is a sedan and the other a wagon? And which one is best for your needs? The Toyota Crown vs. Signia contest isn’t quite a straight fight. Read on.

Toyota Crown Vs. Crown Signia: Design and Execution

Things are not as straightforward as they appear, because Toyota lists the Crown under “Cars” on its website, while the Crown Signia is in the “Crossovers & SUVs” section. So is the Crown sedan nothing more than a sedan with SUV body cladding and an adventure image? Let’s look at the basic numbers first:

    Off-Road Credentials

Moving on to whether the Crown is meant to venture off the beaten path, the numbers make for interesting reading:

    Crown

    Crown Signia

    Ground Clearance

    6.7 inches

Despite the Crown posing as a crossover, it has only 5.8 inches of ground clearance, hardly better than a regular sedan of the same size; a Toyota Camry has 5.4 inches. This isn’t a number you can go off-roading with, so banish any thought of venturing off the beaten track from your mind. There’s a reason Toyota doesn’t call it a crossover.

The Crown Signia is nearly an inch higher at 6.7 inches, but that hardly turns it into an SUV. It’s useful for deeper winter snow and rough gravel roads, but too little for anything but very light trail work, and considerably lower than off-road wagons like the Subaru Outback, which has a ground clearance of 8.7 to 9.5 inches. Even the Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain wagon’s air suspension can lift it to 7.8 inches on its highest setting, handily beating the Crown Signia.

Toyota Crown Signia Vs. Crown: Performance and Efficiency

The same naturally aspirated 2.5-liter 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain does duty in both models, but the one in the Crown Signia is a little more powerful, and it’s optimized to tow, whereas the standard Crown isn’t. We found it capable of 33 mpg in real-world conditions when we tested it. The Crown sedan can also be had with a turbocharged 340-hp hybrid powertrain.

The main differentiator between the Crown Limited and Crown Platinum is the latter’s turbocharged 340-hp hybrid powertrain with a conventional 6-speed automatic transmission and full-time AWD.

    Features and Space

The Crown sedan is offered in XLE, Nightshade, Limited, and Platinum trims, but the Crown Signia is offered in XLE and Limited trims only, with a few subtle differences between them:

    Price Comparison

The Crown Signia XLE is about $3K more expensive than the Crown XLE because of its longer wagon body, hands-free power liftgate, upgrades to support a 2,700-pound towing capacity, and a slightly more powerful powertrain. At the Limited level, the Crown Signia has extra features, like a digital rearview mirror and 11-speaker JBL audio.

    Final Verdict

The Crown is a semi-crossover sedan, and you may find it intriguing if you liked the Volvo S60 Cross Country or Subaru SUS. It’s mostly window dressing, as it really shouldn’t venture off the tarmac. Toyota sold just 12,309 of them in the US in 2025. The Crown Signia makes a lot more sense. Its practical wagon body and more useful ground clearance resonated with 20,550 American buyers last year.

We love Crown’s many standard features, Lexus-like execution, and oddball looks, but it’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing. It’s a well-equipped semi-premium sedan with pseudo-crossover styling, positioned between the Toyota Camry and the Lexus ES. The Crown Signia is the one to go for with its exemplary fuel economy, crossover clearance, and practical wagon body, and is an excellent car within the limitations of its ground clearance.
