    Taking on Europe

After repeated failed attempts to match the Germans and the Japanese in the midsize executive car market, Cadillac finally nailed it with the CTS. The first generation was a resounding success, and proof that America could hang with the best in class. The second generation was even better, and we even got a wagon version.

One could say that the CTS was a turning point for Cadillac. It helped redefine the brand’s image in the 2000s and 2010s, coinciding with the Escalade’s success. Let’s not forget the high-performance V models, either, as those were genuinely good cars, too.

    The Backstory

As mentioned, the second-gen CTS came with a Sport Wagon version. Intended to rival the Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon and the BMW 5 Series Touring, it was Cadillac’s first-ever wagon, and one could say it was patterned after its Continental rivals. It didn’t totally copy those, though, as its distinct looks meant you wouldn’t lose it in a car park that easily.

But then, Cadillac gave us the CTS-V Sport Wagon, effectively America’s first, and so far, only high-performance station wagon. Then GM vice chairman Bob Lutz championed the car and helped make it happen. He once said, “Should sufficient demand materialize, there is no reason why we couldn’t do a V-Series wagon, and I would be standing in line for one, just ahead of you.” In the end, though, just 1,767 were made, of which 514 came with a manual. While it wasn’t a massive sales success, it’s a highly desirable car now, and Classic.com lists values at about $54,000 for automatics, and a little over $66,000 for manuals.

The one we spotted on Bring a Trailer is an automatic, but that doesn’t make it any less special. Besides, it’s a rare car to begin with, no matter how many pedals it has. It’s seen a fair bit of service and upgrades over the years, namely a rebuilt supercharger, a new battery, a Lingenfelter solid supercharger isolator, and a differential fluid flush, to name a few. It isn’t totally perfect, but it’s one for the wagon enthusiast.

    Why It’s Special

While Europe was awash in performance wagons in the late 2000s and through to this day, it was a bone-dry market in the U.S. By the time the CTS-V Sport Wagon arrived in 2010, it was all alone as cars like the Audi S4 Avant and Mercedes-Benz E63 Wagon had either been axed or sold out by that time. It was eventually joined by the new-generation E63 in 2012, but even then, it remained an extremely limited segment. Still, the CTS-V Sport Wagon was an epic addition to the Cadillac lineup. You won’t find anything like it now that performance SUVs are far more popular, but that’s all the more reason to get one.
