The picture is clearly labeled as it being an ambulance that is owned by a funeral home. The funeral home industry has provided the ambulance service since the beginning of the 20th century in many communities, since they had people on duty to take the death calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They also had the only vehicles that had a rear compartment that was big enough to accommodate a person in the prone position. Funeral homes provided this as a service to the community, and rarely ever made a profit on the ambulance service side of the business. When they got out of the ambulance service, they most often donated the vehicles to the community fire or police departments which took over the ambulance service.
