These images were taken on June 23, 1952, in Kirkwood, Missouri, at the Kirkwood Theatre. The Movie House was one of the stops on the “Will Rogers Caravan,” promoting the new movie “The Will Rogers Story” and rededicating Route 66 as the Will Rogers Highway.

The Caravan began next to the Chain of Rocks Bridge where it crosses the Mississippi River at St Louis. It was followed by ceremonies on the state lines of Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, ending at Palisades Park in Santa Monica, California. The Highway 66 Association, Warner Brothers Film Studio, Ford Motor Company, and Rt 66 Associations from those eight states organized the Caravan.

I feel as thought this photo has been shared previously. I seem to recall the car under the cover in the lower right hand corner of the image sparking some conversation.

 

Haven't seen the picture before. The car under the cover is clearly a Porsche.

 

The car under the cover it could be a Porsche but I’m wondering about the red Volkswagen six cars down it seems to be some sort of illusion or a very long wheel based VW.

 

You're referring to the red convertible, with the top down?
I think it's just an illusion, because your mind is 'creating' space for a 'trunk area' to the rear of the folded top, when in fact, the rear edge of the folded top was pretty much right over the rear bumper. It looks 'OK' to me, but I can see where someone might be a bit confused.
