Yes. The terminal buildings were designed in two sections: You had the buildings at the curbs which served as ticketing, baggage collection, and baggage retrieval. Then you had the separate buildings out in the ramp areas that had the actual gates. You got to and from your gates via very long pedestrian tunnels which went under the plane ramp areas. There were also the 'moving sidewalks' if you didn't want to walk. That design has since been changed, and now the 'gate' buildings are larger, and are joined with the main terminal buildings.

 

A ha. Dad got stuck at LAX for three days, starting on September 11th, 2001, and I'm sure he had a fun time with that.
