Holy crap, this is Seattle! It's some years before Interstate 5 was constructed, and U.S. highway signs were white with black lettering. This is the north end of the Alaskan Way Viaduct, which is of the same design and construction as the former Cypress St. Viaduct that collapsed during the Loma Prieta quake in San Francisco in 1989. It was completed in April 1953, so between then and when the state changed all signage to the current green with white lettering would be the timespan this pic was taken.

Having relatives at the time (50's- 60's) in San Mateo, I have a vague recollection of visiting this place, maybe when I was 6 or 7.... Not entirely sure, though.

^^^^ It's before my time, Krash, but I love vintage pics of SF in this era. Silvertwinkiehobo, sounds like your late mom had great taste also!

From what I understand, Playland-by-the-Beach was a magical place in San Francisco if you were a kid there in the 50s or 60s.

It was a typical small-scale amusement park. Probably do all the rides in an hour or two.......
In West L.A., where I lived, we had Pacific Ocean Park, south of the Santa Monica Pier by about a mile. Also on a pier. It was a full-scale amusement park with some rides that rivaled Disneyland. Ended up going out of business in the mid to late 60's and eventually burned down in a fire later..... I remember I was at POP on the day the L.A. Dodgers won the 1963 World Series. Virtually the whole park (including me) had a transistor radio glued to their ear......

Man, those were the days! I remember Mom, Dad and my oldest brother Fred taking our three vehicles down to the three local gas stations to get in line for gas. Then Dad would siphon gas off the two big vehicles for his VW since he had to drive some 30 or more miles from Navy housing to NAS Sandpoint in Seattle, one way.
