When I had my two different VW beetles the kids rode behind the back seat next to the rear window. Way back. They loved it back there. I offered to let them ride in the front trunk but they wouldn't go for that. Maybe I should have added port hole windows.
I absolutely love telling this family story: Mom and Dad had a '66 Bug convertible they bought new at the King of Prussia, PA VW Port of Entry, and it basically was Dad's work car (he was a Naval officer). Back in March of 1969, when Dad came home from Viet Nam, we lived in a rental house near Portland, OR, and upon getting home, our house was packed to move up here to North of Seattle; we (Mom, Dad and us five kids) piled into the Bug...Dad driving, Mom in the passenger seat with me on her lap, my two oldest brothers and sister in the back seat (with her in the middle) and my brother Geoff in that cubby behind the rear seat! Portland to Seattle, with two stops at rest areas.
It's a Rolls Canardly. Rolls down one hill, Cn'ardly make it up the next! (seriously, it looks like a cool car!)
