Most people had a set of snow tires which were installed in the fall and rotated out in the spring. I still remember one Thanksgiving day when a snow storm was predicted. I was in college and had to work that day, along with another employee who was in high school. He worked the pumps and I worked the bays. We changed out 126 sets of snow tires during our shift, my all time record. He pulled the cars in and loosened the lug nuts if he had time. Some were already on rims, but most needed to be mounted and balanced. By the end of shift, we had it down to a science.
There is something I miss about seeing cars running around with snow tires on. Especially when it was a sporty or muscley type. Like a Corvette with white walls and full hubcaps trying to "blend in"
We also had a stud gun for making studded snow tires. It was tedious. Then they outlawed them and we had to pull the studs out, which was even more tedious.
