PLANT'S GARAGE March 1938 from The Times Record On March 1, 1938 at 6:36 a.m. as men were on their way to work at the Bath Iron Works an explosion rocked the down town area. Plant's Garage, located 737 Washington St., a two story building, exploded killing two and injuring others. It was suspected that a vehicle was leaking gas all night, the explosion was caused by gas fumes ignited by a cigarette. Killed in the explosion was Henry Fuller, 28 of Robbins Street, Bath who was a mechanic at the garage, and Arthur J. Ward, 32, of North Bath, who was parking his car to have work done on it. He was employed at the BIW as an electrician. In the area at the time of the explosion and injured were: Police Officer Robert D. Green, 25, who was hit in the head by flying debris. It knock him off his feet and blood covered his eyes, but he managed to crawl to the street. George O. Delano of Woolwich, who was on his way to work at the BIW had cuts to his hip, right leg, and head. Leonard Lord, 61 of Fitts St. was cut above his left eye and knocked to the ground. Harold R. Roberts, 33 of Boothbay, and employee of R. H. Houston Corp, who was working for BIW was cut on the side of the head and his ear was almost removed. His brother-in-law, George E. Soule, 33, BIW worker was walking with Roberts and was also hit in the side of the head. Fred C. Hill, 68, of North St., an employee of BIW, was also hit on the right side of the head, and had a splinter in his leg.
