I hope this turns out for you, for the good But, me being me....... You have put alot of time, $, and repairs, into your car and from your description it's a great car, and some one wants to trade you flat out for as you mentioned a "X" taxi.... Hmmmm
My parents had an Aerostar. My brother was driving it and the transmission just drained out all the fluid. A mile away on a separate highway and one that was newer the same thing happened. What are the odds? Smooth ride though. I will have to find out what year it is exactly. I can't afford transmission problems. Even though the transmission has been rebuilt I don't trust it because of the place it was taken to. It is known for doing bad work. How it stays in business I will never know...
I know, Tedy. My wife worked at the company that owned it. It was the only taxi not destroyed by the tornado. On the bright side (if there is one) this van was not in service for very long, and for the first several months it was only used for a few casino runs a week. It didn't start getting used regularly until around the beginning of the year.
hey i live near akron! the aerostar was a good van with a bad weak point...the transmission. the rare Stick shift ones never break
I can't drive stick... Yet. I will learn some day. You live near Akron... I think I remember you mentioning that before. I don't suppose you know of a good online resource that we can use to look for homes for rent and/or jobs for there do ya? Not being able to is part of what is holding us back. We need to know how much $$$ we will need to move and if it is feasible to do so without having to move there in steps then...
That's what I've done in the past with the little bit of towing I've done. I'll gladly give up a couple MPG to keep the trans healthy.
We have decided to pass on the van. It isn't worth in excellent condition what my car is worth in good, and I'm in no position to take on transmission problems. Thanks all for your help and info on these vans. Saved me from making a big mistake.
It seems now that there is some less pressure on me to make this happen. We are thinking about staying here in Joplin for awhile longer. Z feels that we will have a much easier time moving if she has a degree in something. Job opportunities being such as they are these days. We are still going to put the kia back up for sale in February and I will talk to the guy with the Granada. It is such a rare find I hope that I can convince him that we will be a good choice and that we will provide it with a good home and all the care it needs.
Everybody keeps ragging on the poor 'ole Aerostar. We had one back around 1991 when the kids were little. It was the short version with the little 3.0 V6 (actually a 2.9 from what I've heard) , and had the full zoot Eddie Bauer package. Kids and I, sans wifey, took a 10 day trip in that thing and it was great. You could fold the backrest of the middle seat down against the 3rd seat cushion and turned the back area into a big playpen for the girls. (I let them out of their car seats when traffic was light. If it got bad, daddy would tell them to buckle up, which they did, all by themselves. Anyway, The Aerostar was a bit low on power (you couldn't get the short version with the larger 4.0 V6.), but it rode nice....... I believe we moved on to a Chevy Astro van after that.
You had the same kind of Aerostar my parents had. Their's was grey inside and a dark grey exterior. One smooth ride. It was beaten up when my parents got it. They modified home style to accommodate my Dad's electric wheelchair and put a brand new brake system on it. That transmission problem was the only wrong with it till it blew a gasket... I think. Something happened with the engine. They aren't bad vans the were just given problem potential transmissions.
