There's a reason that feature didn't make it...imagine if the vehicle's parked, you're in the back sitting behind the driver and getting out on the driver's side. Now imagine all this and a car hits the door while driving by and your legs are out....
I imagine you use your imagination too much. Very rarely does anyone park along a busy street at the curb anymore. And when getting out you are supposed to look before opening the door to exit. For many years cars had front or rear suicide doors. Wonder why they called them suicide doors? Imagine a car hitting the front hinged opened back door while the driver is getting out. Still gonna hurt someone. :banghead3:
Lower-ranking admiral, on his flagship at Pearl Harbor, sent a message to a higher-ranking admiral's flagship, when he thought the other admiral was ashore: "I observe that your sailors are not wearing the Uniform of the Day." The higher-ranking admiral, who was not ashore, sent this message back: "I observe that you observe too much." Yeah, Dad told me about how suicide doors got their name, as he had a high school buddy who was hobbled for life when a car that changed lanes, on 4th Avenue in Seattle, just clipped the door and smashed his friend's lower leg.
People have always talked about suicide doors being dangerous. I think they really got that name when unattended children opened the door while a vehicle was moving, which pulled them out. Because even a conventional doored car would be hazardous to your legs if you stepped out into traffic. Now days we don't really have many times to worry how the doors open because most of our parking is in parking lots. Perhaps our government should make all automakers design gullwing doors or sliding doors to save us from ourselves.
