Supposedly, McQ exclusively did his own stunts. That's a new one.
Using a Brit motorcycle was probably Hollywood's greatest Blooper of all time. I wonder why they didn't employ a German bike, instead.
What is this? If the driver wasn't sitting there, who could tell which was front and rear. I caught this one, while doing my Winter forage shopping in Colmar, France which was once part of Germany:

Cool Brasserie just left of that white wagon. This village is near the German border:

Yeah, McQueen was very upset and had a few choice words about the studio execs when the director, John Sturges, told him what they said.

Even choicier than "Take yer jowb an' shove it"?

To the left is a gun store, in Colmar. Well, actually a weapons store (arms or armament, to be exact. "Armurerie", in French) which includes knives and crossbows. French arms legislation is somewhat more liberal than Germany's. So, you can get stronger slingshot bands and more powerfull crossbows. Still a joke, compared to U.S. standards.
To the right is the federal police station which is the equivalent of the F.B.I.. Coincidentally, the 2nd weapons outlet burned down, several years ago. It was located in the center of town, instead of across authorities who could keep an eye as to who goes in and out. So, take it from there

There were a couple times McQueen threatened to walk out because his part wasn't big enough, and the studio refused to let Sturges cut those parts out, counting on McQueen to carry the pic. BTW, I did some deeper reading, and found the reason they used Triumph bikes for all the German motorcycles. The guy who did the actual jump was the owner of a Triumph dealership in L.A., and a good friend of McQueen's. McQueen had suggested him for the stunt.

So, one hand washes the other. Nothing like using the film industry to advertise your goods. If his best friend would have owned a German bike dealership, instead, the film would have turned out much less fictitious

Leaving a parking lot, after having shopped at a butcher, in Ühlingen:

I was on my way to a junkyard, to see if I could get one of those gasiline- or diesel-fueled space heaters for my small pickup. You know, the type we used to mount in our VW Beetles, back then. On the way, I ran into a detour, because the main road was blocked because of construction work. The second image shows exactly where I was, on a map:

I remember having a gas heater for my 1957 VW Beetle. The regular heater didn't get the water from the radiator hot enough!:biglaugh:

I be tempted to take that side road cutoff to the right (if you were backing up) and check out the fall colors.

Wot?! You converted your Beetle to watercooling? It was oddball enuff, that you drove a Hippy car, back then. Were you a Beatnik replica or something?

It only takes a water-cooled Vanagon transaxle to do it. Our '66 Bug convertible had a gas heater installed also. Probably how Dad kept from freezing to death when driving down the Pennsylvania interstate in his uniform with the top down as the snow fell.

Many are crazy about the beer that they brew at this brewery (last 4 images). I, myself, don't particulatrly like their beers. I'll drink them, if invited. I prefer sipping Lasser Dark, instead, which is brewed some 60 kilometers westward. Like Jim Morrison used to say, "The West is the best"
