I just found out where GM came up with the name NOVA.
    It was an acronym for:

    Nova
    Omega
    Ventura
    Apollo

That's interesting. I've never heard that before. So was NOVA considered the platform then, like the Ford FOX platform years later?

GM always classed their basic platforms with a letter code. IIRC, the Nova and its brethren were X-body, before that letter was assigned to the FWD Citation and its brethren. Of course, you say "Nova" in Spanish-speaking countries, especially Mexico, and they all snicker--"No Va" is short for "No Vamanos(Sp.?)" meaning "No go," "no movement," etc.

I don't think I can recall ever seeing a yellow police car, marked or unmarked.

Police and public safety emergency vehicles on parade (above) and over a dozen police cars (below) in a residential area.

Yeah, it 'fits', but that was strictly a coincidence. The name 'Nova' was first used by Chevrolet as the top trim version of the Chevy II, way back in 1962. This was years before there was any Buick with the 'Apollo' name, or any Oldsmobile with the 'Omega' name. And the Pontiac name 'Ventura' had been in use since 1960 on their full-sized cars.

And what about battalion chief's cars?

I once saw an early Panther LTD, '79 or '80 because it had the two big headlamps, that was an ex-fire chief's car, with the license plate FYRBOAT.

If the AVON lady was capable of peddling her goods well, she could have opted for the uppity trim package
