I was about to call BS until I saw the light bar on the Checker. I could see a small town doing that as a cost-saving measure.

The cops might just have desired a roomier lighter car which could easily have a big block Chevy dropped into it

    Nope, 250 inline six.

In the case of the Claremont, New Hampshire squad cars, it appears that economy was given a higher priority over performance. According to Claremont Police Chief Joseph Devine, the Checkers were ordered with six cylinder engines for economy, additionally the expectation that the heavy duty bodies would provide for longer service outweighed the price paid for the Checker’s when compared to the Dodge Aspen.

    Actual Claremont Checker

The Checker price differential when compared to the Dodge was $1400.00 higher, but the expectation was that the Checkers would last twice as long as the Dodges. Devine was quoted as follows “money is a greater concern for the city than speed

Years ago, about the time of this photo, across the river from us here in central Illinois this and much larger buckets were used to strip mine coal. Many of those places filled with water and became county parks for fishing and duck hunting.

Checker forced officers to become peaceful, since their catch quickly got out of firing range. The city also saved on medical costs, because Checker-assigned peace officers were no longer able to engage in armed conflicts

That would be a great money making idea. Just go out and fetch some big juicey rats and then bring them to affluent neighborhoods and hope that housewives are home. Then send some rugrat or organ grinder's suit-wearing monkey with a collection basket door to door to harvest spare change, under the threat that the rats would get released. If released anyway, the poor things are likely to starve, because residents of the affluent neighborhoods tend to dispose of waste and even to do it properly

LOLZ on the wind-up Checker, and I remember the MAD Magazine 'ad' with the Humble/ESSO/ENCO tiger eating the gas station attendant.

Imagine if they had cellphones, back then. They would have gotten prank calls around the clock from people calling them for taxi service
