Ooh, the transmissions were fully non-synchronous. I always thought the first gearboxes were synchronized 2nd-4th gears in the production models.

 

Featured is a 1938 prototype which survived deliberate post-War prototype destruction. It was found in Lithuania and traded for a restored K.d.F. Beetle. It has the oldest surviving Beetle engine and displaces 900 c.c.. Don't forget to thumb up the videos. The more thumb ups, the more old VW videos are likely to be filmed:
