When we left Illinois nearly 24 years ago many people had vanity plates. I had one on every vehicle except the motorhome. I enjoyed looking at them and trying to figure what some represented. For instance MODELT 1 was on my Ford Escort. Also was cheaper to add a number.

Now a vanity plate in Illinois costs more extra than a car payment so I'm not seeing many.
My oldest son bought a new mini van and has a young daughter that owns it. She even has her own special seat and TV monitor. His tag is I*** N US.

In Florida there are so many specialty tags it's difficult knowing what state you are in.

But my stubbornness did luck out. My birthday is January so I waited to apply for my Illinois tag just before my birthday. There were several advantages. Tags are due when you buy the vehicle or transfer title. In Florida they are due on your birthday. So my family car is due on my birthday and the day I transferred the title and tags.
An added bonus Illinois finally changed to a nicer looking license tag so I got two of the first new plates. I only wanted one but they insisted I drill holes in my plastic bumper and cover up half the grille and incoming air.

In New York on the DMV website you can enter your choice of a custom plate number to see if it is available. If it is available a picture of you choice will show so you can see how the plate will look.
You can also apply to use some older year of the car New York plates. They say you can not restore the older plates but most people I know end up restoring the plates after they get approval to use them.

On my 1974 Chevrolet Caprice Estate the plate reads DADS 74. I got my dad these plates as a Christmas gift back in 1986 and my dad never put them on the car. My dad passed away July 1993 and in 1994 i put these plates on the wagon where they belong. My other oldie a 1957 Pontiac sedan has the plates OLDCAR. I got those plates back in 1982 and they have been on a 1956 Chev 210 sedan, a 1957 Chev Bel Air hardtop and now my 1957 Pontiac sedan. The 57 SIX plate was the plate i got for my 57 Pontiac when i bought the car in 1996. I put the OLDCAR plates on it when i sold my 57 Chev Bel Air in 2006. Cheers. George
