I was 14 and it was in my uncle's white over green '51 Cadillac 4 door. I remember it like it was yesterday.......we went out an old country road, he stopped and I ran around the car, got in, dropped the Caddy in "D", and we were off! Only had N-D-L-R in that order on the gear selector. No power steering or brakes, just a huge old car that drove like a tank compared to newer ones. This was in 1960. I still think about that from time to time.:yippee:

I drove my dad's 73 Caprice Estate wagon when I was 14 (later it became my wagon). I also drove pickups for the local farmers because I was the only kid they could hire that could drive a stick-shift.:chirp:
Also, when I lived in Oklahoma, I could legally drive my 125CC motorcycle on the road during daylight hours on local streets only, at age 14. That was fun!!

I was 13. My Dad's friend had a BIG hog farm in southern Illinois with lots of dirt roads on the property so I got to drive the old 50 Ford pickup around the farm.

I was 8, steering while sitting on my uncle's lap.

Driving a car by myself...I was 14. Dad took me out in my mother's 72 Mercury Marquis Brougham and taught me how to drive and dock...I mean park...that yacht. At 15, I took Driver's Ed and got my license at 15 1/2.

Every so often, I take my kids (8 and 10-year old boys) down the street and back sitting on my lap and letting them steer. Only one accident, my younger one (7 at the time) backing up and scraping a railroad-tie retaining wall with the back corner of the car. I never got it fixed...I'm kinda proud of that scrape! My baby-boys are growing up fast!
