They have to be flexible, up here, because of the snow drifts, or you can kiss goodbye to the rad, the fan, and lotsa moola!

I suggested it to Andy, and he showed me what's left on the ones on his car. Scotch Mist!

I found this thread on a Maverick splash shield, and a lot of guys were surprised to learn they came with them.

Anyway, they concentrate the new air around the block (cooler running) keep the water and road crap off the Alternator/AC on the Passenger side, and off the Electronic Ignition box on the Driver's side.

TBird we got a pair today! I got a new Air Dam, like yours, and the missing radio support bracket. Andy even got a cruise control, etc. Lots of etceteras. They're in nice shape, so we'll make up some templates for the future. :thumbs2:

Felt like Christmas! The last good Fairmont in the yards - I got my new seats from that one. Lots of odd goodies (clips, push pins, hood bumpers, windshield water bottle and motor, vacuum connectors. He'll chime in somewhere with his treasure list, and we're going back. The Dash is almost crack-free! Might score some other parts too.

Yep, always fun cruisin' the yards. Great day for it too, 75 F, nice breeze, sunny.

Sounds like my kind of day. I hope to go and get a few things for my wagon in a few days. One thing I will never find down here is a crack free dash pad. LOL

Keep it away from the crack dealers? Get the old sewing machine out and sew up a matching chunk of naughahyde - pleated or diamond and silver studded screws and new speaker covers sunk in. Cheap, custom and almost rodder look!

If I get my renovation jobs done this summer/fall, I'm gonna do my dash, my way. That plastic is old and if there are other good ones around, they'll crack up too. The structure and the top pad.

I only have to worry about the defrost and AC ducts. The rest is my call. Good winter project.

May the fleas of a thousand camels ...:biglaugh: I'd never be so brutal to wish our winters on any slacker!!!:biglaugh: Not even me!!

Actually, Andy and I had round one on his dash/instrument panel. We want to do mine together, and remove the last good one here in town and reinstall his. We'll be EGGPURTS! :biglaugh:

I'm working on mine all day. Daylight until almost 10 PM tonight.

You were the inspiration, Steve. Your detailed tip on re-installing made us appreciate how two Fairmont guys in the same town could save the wails of anguish! Now we could apply at an assembly plant and really make money. :biglaugh: Well pesetas in Venezuela or yuans in China.

Fairmont Splash Shields - the Final Chapter

Thanks to TBird's help, we could have made these with his detailed sketches and tested them for final fit, but Andy and I weren't sure of the material, until we got this intact pair off another car.

    Here's TBird's sketches again:
Right Side Sketch and dimensions and Picture:

Left Side Sketch and dimensions and Picture
    [IMG]

    june19splash1.jpg

Now the trick is the material(s):

These ones are from what's left of a 1978 to 1982 Fairmont. We don't know what year this car was - the tags were missing - it is a wrecked car. But they look like they're made from a thin flexible Styrene material, like you'd find in a Sign shop.

I remember the old chevies had like a rubberized canvas material over the steering A-frames that did the same job. These ones are shirt-cardboard thin.

You'd have to check your own frame hole locations and adjust your cardboard template to match.

When my car had the 302 - the fuel canister was mounted on the frame, nearer to the rad (passenger side). With the Six, it came mounted on the Shock tower. So you'll have to tweak around that. The rest is as shown.

They need to be flexible for snow drifts in my region or sand dunes in TBird's  to not break off. These styrene ones seemed to have worked ok, but I'll make templates in case they break or fall off. They keep the engine compartment cleaner and any roadway water from splashing up onto hot manifolds or ignition wires. Explains why mine wanted to stall after a big puddle.

You won't even find them in the Ford Shop manuals, and I doubt anybody makes replicas.

    Hope it helps.

That RH splash shield is obviously different due to the car probably not having air conditioning. On the a/c equipped car the alternator in very low resulting in the need for the splash shield to wrap under the alternator to protect it from water. Otherwise those look pretty much like mine. I think the left (drivers side) looks identical. Good find. Be sure to make patterns for the future. You may even find a market for them.:2_thumbs_up_-_anima. I think if you look very closely you might find a part number.

Nope, must have been a skicker for the P/N. And they are not Styrene, they're PVC sheet stock. The sun is flattening them out nicely.

Andy's got the AC in the new Mabel Mont. ;)

We know where there's 3.3L zephyr with Air, so I may take a run, after mine is up and running and turn my old donor body into cash to buy the compressor or trade my V8 compressor. Those shields are die-cut with the knock-outs for the change for the AC. It was a good find.
