Every manufacturer should offer one or two whitewall tires, I'm sure the Towncar/Grand Marquise/Crown Victoria etc drivers would like that, instead of having to get overpriced wws from high end companies. There is a 1962 Buick Invicta convertible here that just got a set of Hankooks put on it, same dealer sells Cooper Trendsetter whitewalls.

Yeah, when I needed front tires for my '95 Town Car, the place we usually get new tires didn't have any white walls! We ended up just getting black wall tires and I will say it does not make my car look good at all... especially with the white walls still on the back. I just couldn't $$$ to pay so much more for white walls.

Someday in the future an automaker will start selling a few cars with white wall tires. Then everyone will want white walls on their older vehicles. Just wait.
As i wrote Firestone WW are available at many dealers here in Floriduuuuu!

Does Michelin make a decent WW tire? I always use Michelins on my Volvo 240 wagon with great results. I wish there was a Michelin WW equivalent for the colony park that really needs new tires.

Cooper makes good tires. I had a set of their white walls on the Fury until they got weather checked and one decided to give out.
I know Coker Tire offers modern radials with the look of Bias-ply, bit as others have mentioned, they aren't cheap.

A good friend of mine is one of those "kids" He thinks the hubcap is the center cap that covers the hub and lug nuts.

He is correct.. That is the correct defination of a hub cap. The larger disk that covers wheel, is commonly known as a wheel cover. GM parts group 5.858...

I don't recall seeing them recently, but back in the early 60's fake whitewalls were available. I remember installing several sets of them on customer's cars. You deflated the tire and broke it down. Then stretched the whitewall over the rim and re-inflated the tire. They may have been for use with tube type tires only....don't recall.

I'm surprised someone doesn't make them today.

I had to have wide white walls. I remember many cars without. I'd go to Western Auto and get a set of the "good" port-a-walls. They were thicker and heavier. Worked fairly well if mounted right. The cheapies would wrinkle and sometimes buckle badly when driving.
You may be correct on only good for bias tires. That's all there were.

Yup, that's what they were called and WA was where we got em. Thanks for the memory bump. I've still got some old tools that I bought at WA way back when. I even painted my first car, a 51 Ford, with midnight blue enamel I bought there.

Western Auto was the first auto parts store that I can remember at home in central Illinois. A cute female highschool classmate was a sales clerk there. Her boyfriend was manager. Darn!
But most parts came from Merrit's junkyard.
Western Auto is long gone. There's a subdivision now where all the oil and antifreeze dripping cars once were at the junk yard.

I have a old tire machine ,it takes bit of work to get them on . You have to keep the ring on the porta a wall centered and it takes a few times of airing up and down to get it right.

I'm sure you've told us before Dan. What year is your pumpkin?
[IMG] I had several of the earlier VW's and loved them.
