Gosh I forgot to tell you, yes we did move due to a job offer I received here. Couldn't pass it up. The offer was attractive as was the opportunity to leave LA lol.

Update on the wagon: The risk I knowingly took on this has turned around bitten me in the behind...at least at this moment. The wagon failed the smog test, pretty severely. It's been in the shop since yesterday. Call today revealed that the first thing we are trying to resolve this is a new O2 sensor. It was "slow to operate in fuel control" is how it was explained to me. I'll know in about two hours if that fixes the problem.

On a similar and perhaps related note, I did have one cold-start experience where the wagon would not "calm down" from its initial high rev. My first thought was that perhaps the choke needed adjusting. I recall going "once to the floor" with the accelerator just before turning the key (as I always did with my '75 and my '70); so I wasn't sure if it was me or the choke. Ultimately, I got it to calm down by again flooring it. After that all was fine again. However, in the same phone call this morning from the shop, they warned me that I MAY be in need of a carburetor rebuild....in which case I'd have to go somewhere else. They have someone to recommend if it comes to this.

More to come in a couple of hours....hopefully GOOD news. :-/

^^ The carb is probably the biggest issue I've had with the Way Back Machine. Very low on power, severed stumbling when cold, poor throttle response. Things have been all fine since I replaced the stock unit with an Edelbrock factory replacement. Fit on the stock manifold. Still not something I would take to the drag strip, but it's a lot better than it was. Finding a good shop to check it out was part of the process as well. Had been to a previous shop that I thought knew what they were doing. Turns out they didn't.

Hm, good suggestion on the Edelbrock. I keep hearing/reading about those. My wagon has the Olds 307 and folks here were not kidding that it's a slower engine than the 350 and 400 I had before. Still, no complaints; I've never been a lead foot. But I did notice the difference climbing a steep hill the other day. Thanks for the idea! As of the 1p call, the search is now on for another part; something to do with the air pump valve. O2 sensor improved the smog test score, but not enough to pass it. :(

One thing I was taught long ago on smog testing. Take the car and put GOOD gas in it. Change the oil and drive it 75-100 miles and flog her a bit(give it a good steady 70 mph run if you can). I was told it will "clean it out" and very VERY much helps pass.

Still not passing smog requirements after a carb adjustment and new O2 sensor. Discovered the air pump diverter valve is failing. Found one, but it's about $800. :( It will take a few days to get here, so in the meantime I'm bringing the wagon home later today. I'm not giving up on this still nearly-new engine yet.

**My apologies to Swanny**. I didn't intend - nor realize until now - to hijack his thread about his fleet of clamshells. The dialogue here about my wagon obviously does not belong here, but perhaps as a continuation of the thread in the classifieds portion under 1987 Caprice. If I knew how to move this part of the conversation over there, I would. Sorry Swanny!

I'd get a used one before I spent that kind of money. They made MILLIONS of those engines
