That wilcap site had a 132 tooth gear for the I4, which reminded me that those engines were based on the I6. Maybe they have a similar flexplate.

The manuals (I'm checking them as we speak ) have pics of the Standard trannies Flywheels, but only show the torque converters for the Automatics (C4). None have the ring gear integrated to the Torque converter. For cryin' out loud. Does the converter have the ring gear or is there a seperate flexplate. Drivin' me nuts!:banghead3::banghead3:

Well, believe it or not, the Haynes manual has a picture and a description to remove and install them.

The Flywheel is not an integrated part of the Torque converter, according to Haynes (page 215, Figure 7.52) Description is on the same page (item 4 - from instruction number 14).

I think the flexplate is pressed or heated onto the TC.
The gear will be heated then fit and spot welded onto the flexplate.

This won't help sort it out, either.

Check out the F214 (for 1963-1982) and then go down to the F227 (for 1978-1980) and F245 (for 1981-1983). For C4, C3 and C5) trannies on 200 I6. All different Ford Part Numbers. Different tooth Pitch (how the starter bendix mates with the teeth), same tooth count.

    EDIT:
Oops! They are for different Ford Auto trannies. No wonder the shops get it wrong. It's a Flexplate for the C4 then, right?

That one looks fine! Oh, the Heat-Oppressed brain! The Chilton and shop manual say that the TC is separable. Clearly, not so.

Anyway, I'll save that list for future reference.

boy howdee those pics bring back memories,,,,90 percent of the ground support equipment i worked on that was gas powered was ford ,,,,,inline 6 ,,170,240,300, and the good old c-4 c-6 and fmx,s,,,,,,,,anyways if i,ve welded one ring gear on a c-4 converter i,ve done a million,,,,they are actually pretty easy to do,,,,,and if i remember correctley the ring gear itself was dirt cheap and welds onto the torque converter

i know things can change quickley in regards to auto parts availability but i do believe if ford discontinued the ring gear i,m pretty positive that napa still carries them ,,,although it may come from china or india but you can still get em,,,,and i agree stock up while you can,,,i know the last airline i was at we had ring gears from both ford and napa

The guys on Fordsix keep discussing the Flexplate and the Flywheel like they're separable. Glad you settled that one for me. Finding one seems to be the issue now. Have you got any vendor names?

Also is it TIG or MIG welding/tacking?

well i,ve used stick before 6013 and 7018,, and then mig welded it with 70-s6 035 hard wire,,,, of course i,ll tig weld anything i can get away with,,,,but it,s a little slower process and usually with this task its a get it out get it done and back in service so i didnt have time to tig weld it,,,,of course you could tig weld it if you so desires i reckon,,,,and usuallly i would cut through the weld with a cut off wheel,,,, remove ring gear ,,,clean up all he welded areas and grind a bevel on the weld left on the converter ,,,,line up the ring so its level and centered and weld on using the skip welds on the converter as a guide,,,,,,some had obout one inch long welds and some were just large tacks,,,,,,i usually used what was on the converter at that time,,,,gimme a day or so to make a call or two on the vendor on them,,,,,,:dancing:

I just checked NAPA Canada, but they just list the range of parts they have/carry. Andy's well-connected on that score. But do check anyway. The Fordsix guys are competing for the same parts!

If worse comes to worse, I've got a friend with the welder to do that part. Thanks for the rod/wire numbers.

I bet that one is the one for ours. It's $100 more than everything else...
