Correct, the Olds wagons never got a passenger bag. '92 was the last year for the Custom Cruisers. The 94 Caprice and Roadmasters got passenger bags, but the Olds wagon was sadly long gone by then. It would have so cool if they'd made LT1 Custom Cruisers. It's too bad everyone went SUV crazy in the 1990's....
Oh took a little road trip in the Cruiser on Saturday. I totally love the new wheel and MAN the a/c works better when it isn't blocked by a huge air bag! Was 85 here over the weekend. What's winter? -Mike
81X11----It's too bad everyone went SUV crazy in the 1990's.... It seems younger people are SHEEP. They don't lead, they follow!
Minivans. While SUVs certainly contributed, I think it was primarily the advent of minivans beginning in the mid-80s the spelled the beginning of the end for station wagons as the standard family hauler.
I agree. It was the minivan. Coincidently I decided to buy my 55 Chevy wagon and fix it up rather than buy a minivan. Notice the blacked out side window areas and pillars on my wagon? This became my minivan wannabee.
I'm happy with my minivans they have 4 doors and a hatch in the rear where you can put stuff.... just like a wagon only smaller, front wheel drive and a v-6!
Never owned a minivan but can see how they would be handy and fairly good on fuel. Still glad I didn't buy the red HHR I looked at two years ago.
I'll have to say that the minivans were extremely convenient when our girls were young. Once they were old enough to pile in and belt themselves up, and we didn't need to schlep all the baby stuff, the convenience factor wasn't so important. We had a '86 Dodge Colt Vista, a '89 Ford Aerostar Eddie Bauer, and a '93 Chevy Astro LT.
OK, smarty pants! You've done it now, lol! Local Austin News TV reports, Feb some date, 2013 "Blizzard sweeps through central Texas! Thousands, including a white Olds Custom Cruiser, stranded on I-35!"
No minivans here when I started my family in the mid to late 90s. Especially wrong-wheel-drive ones. We went the Ford Expedition route and a few years later I added the wagon to the mix.
And where is an advantage in there? Smaller is no help when you need legnth. Front wheel drive is no good for towing heavy loads, and I can get through winter easier in rear wheel drive, too, and a V-6 that uses gas like a V-8 is no benefit, either. I'll take a rear wheel drive wagon any day!
I had a 1994 Ford Aerostar van. The Dustbuster or The Doorstop. What a huge ugly POS. It was an extended version but only had the 3.0 V6. I only got it because it had low miles and was clean, and came into my shop with a bad transmission. Gave $400 for it, fixed it, and processed to hate it. It didn't have enough power to punch through a wet paper towel. It went through two transmissions and a full a/c system...in the one year I owned it. Traded it EVEN for my '89 Olds Custom Cruiser, and while it also was pretty gutless, it was much quieter, MUCH more comfy, and worlds more reliable. No more minivans...ever! -Mike
There is a reason I called my Aerostar "The Van Of Questionable Mechanical Integrity". I don't mince words. It was a mess.
