Last summer when we were in New Hampshire shopping we picked up a headlight buffing kit.
The headlights on my Jimmy have been cloudy/hazey since I got him...must be 7 years ago now. I had them buffed, supposedly by a professional, one time before. But I really wasn't that impressed with the resultes. So when we saw this kit we picked it up.
Hubby finally had a chance to try it out yesterday and so far we are both totally amazed by the out come. It didn't seem to take along time, about 30 minutes.
Here's a few before and afters...

Don't think I need to prepare for that project just yet. My HHR still looks good (except the bug splatz), and the wifey's Exploder is only showing a little bit of clouding. What do those kits run, and do they include everything but the drill motor?

If you use a corded drill they will come out better, mine did anyway.

Did you wet sand them first?

I was at a VW-Porsche-Audi-BMW dealer today. They've got a 'special' on headlight restoration. Normally $100 bucks.......per headlight. They'll take 50 bucks off if you do both.

Yup, with a variable speed electric drill....because you want consistant power but not to much RPM as heat will do damage..

500 grit, then 800 grit, then a buffing compound. Everything was included in the kit...can't imagine we paid more then $20.00 for it but I really don't remember. I'll get the name tomorrow, it's in the garage and I've just parked me arse! :D It did work well though!

Did my wife's Sebring last week. I wet sanded with 2400grit (I find that speeds things up a little) and followed that up with a Powerball and a container of Mother's Chrome Polish. Given that I already had everything in the shop, it didn't cost me a dime.

There's some stuff advertised on TV right now that LOOKS amazing. Put it on wipe it off and they look NEW. I don't buy these TV deals but this looked like it would be worth a try. Supposed to take a matter of seconds as I recall.

Yup, I've used toothpaste alot in the past for various polishing. Gel toothpaste doesn't do sqwat, but good old regular white paste Colgate is great.

Yeah, I can't justify buying from TV iether, odly enouoh though.... I attended a home trade show about a month ago and totally out of place in there was a guy selling arisol can all in one car polish. I was skeptical because as the seller claimed, I can only buy it from him, can't buy it in any car store, or onlile. He was from the states jumping from trade show to car show selling this wonder product.

After chating with him and me being cheap also he let me take a can out to the parking lot where our 83 Crewzer was parked. I did one piece of chrome in 5 seconds and even my honey said "Holly Sh**"!
I hagled with him and bout 3 cans for $25 c/w a fist full of soft polishing cloths......

......If I had a brain I would have bout a few dozen, the crap works like gang busters.

That's nuther thing among other things I can't figure out. They advertise on TV and send salespeople to shows to sell these wonder products. But they can't be bought in stores near you, or far away. If the product is so good and they want to make money sell the stuff at Wally World and NAPA. I don't trust anyone! And yes regular old white toothpaste makes a good rubbing compound. Good on painted aluminum RV's. And when out camping and out of toothpaste, rubbing compound makes good toothpaste!:yahoo: Just be sure to set your buffer or drill on low RPM.:yikes:
