well Scout...the silver lining is that it didnt go up in flames sounds like you had a hoot tho careful..."Gofastitis" can be a fatal disease
The only way I'd do that is if the only other option is a very hard crash landing! Your wagon posted some pretty good times, and though I hate chasing down shorts, that's a lot better than irrepairable damage.
Thanks everybody - it was a lot of fun! Rev - you're right - I'm trying to just have a mild case of "Gofastitis"! I've started in on the repair and I had my buddy who's a lot smarter than me about electrical issues look at it, and he thinks we can repair it now so that I can still have fun with the wagon until winter, then I can dig in and do the entire wiring job. I recently purchased a replacement dash (mine had a couple of cracks in it from being in NM/TX it's whole life) so when I re-wire it this winter I'm going to replace the dash, add the Moon tach and matching oil, volt and water gauges. My dash has 4 gauge clusters and the one on the far right was for the clock, but since my wagon is the base version it's blank - the new tach fits in there perfectly so I'm anxious to get the new gauges hooked up and have much better insight into how Betty's feeling!
Reminds me of what happened to my grandpas old '55 Cadillac a few years ago. My uncle had the generator "rebuilt"... on the first trip out, we kept smelling something "hot". We got about 5 miles down the road and my stupid uncle finally pulled over and the generator was smoking. I dont remember why other than he was a fool, so we kept going and going... and going. He says he thinks its just where its "new". How stupid. lol. Well we are now about 10 miles down the road and smoke starts billowing in from the dash vents! Well we pull over, he quickly raises the hood and the wiring harness up by the battery/radiator (where the original posters wires were burnt) were in flames on my grandpas car and burning pretty good!! Thankfully my dad was behind us in his car and had a fire extinguisher and put out the fire fast, but not before ruining all of those wires. They rewired it and had a new generator put on and all has been fine for the past few years. Come to find out the guy that rebuilt it put some wrong parts in and it was heavily overcharging, so it eventually burnt the wires. Grandpa passed away about 14 months ago and now the car belongs to my uncle... tucked away in the garage... wish it was mine.
