We have 4 drive ins still operating in Ga. The Starlight on Moreland Ave was the only one I was aware of before looking at Yeller's link(thanks Yeller!). I remember as a kid and a teen driving by the Roosevelt in College Park across from the railroad. It was a big one it seems, 700 cars. Was sad to see it close even though I never saw a show there. The property, buildings, sign, screen sat decaying for years.
I've only been to one drive in (in a car) in my life and I don't even remember what movie played, I was young, young! My Dad took me and a cousin, I remember the swings and stuff before the movie too. I clearly remember dad handing me a paper $ bill and sent me and my cousin off for pop corn and pop while he stayed in the car. As if it was yesterday I still remember buying 3 large popcorn buckets, pop, candy, candy, and more candy. My old man blew a gasket! The 3 of us didn't even finnish one bucket, and the pile of candy went home with my cousin!! Same drivein, in our early teens we would take the long bike ride to and sneak in the exit, the concession stand had picknick tables and played the sound. Sometimes we got cout and kicked out, sometimes we saw show. This was back in Winterpeg Manitoba.
Oddly here in the Chicago area their are two left that I know of. The one near my home in McHenry IL and the one in West Chicago but I have never been to that one. The McHenry one will show a lot of classic movies from the '60s and '70s. I want to see Close Encounters of The Third Kind in my '78 Country Squire.....something fitting to that!
This drive in use to show a lot of R and X Rated movies http://www.drive-ins.com/theater/vttmidw Now there is a church there
My first drive-in memory was seeing a double-feature of Raiders of the Lost Ark and then (ha) Flash Gordon, from the tail gate of Mom's '78 Grand Safari as a kid in Tulsa Oklahoma. Didn't have drive-in's in Denver or New Jersey but when I came back to Texas in 1992 for college there was an OLD drive-in in Dallas I had fun visiting. Sadly the concession stand burned years back and it shut down. I was excited when they opened the new Galaxy drive-in close to my In-laws on I-45 in Ennis, just south of Dallas, and when we go visit I always try to sneak off for a show. Took all five kids to the show last Saturday. Stopped at Whataburger on the way and snuck in food and drinks, but still ended up getting popcorn and more drinks during the second feature. Man my wagon was a mess after the show, but it's always worth it and the kids love it! Pulling in to The Galaxy just north of Ennis Texas Waiting for the sun to set Kiddos watching the movie from the wagon Tailgate party at the Drive-In Got a great seat next to the wagon, my view from my chair Wagon during intermission between films. Fun stuff! http://www.galaxydriveintheatre.com/ -Mike
It's also kind of neat, in a sad way, when you stumble on a closed drive-in. There is one on the east side of I-35, about a block off the highway, called The Circle, in Waco Texas. And another one, The Starlite right off 290 just south of Brenham Texas Here's some neat links to closed ones, if you're bored!
