Your best bet with a torch is to heat it till it glows dully red, then apply a chunk of paraffin wax to the threads. It will melt and seep into the threads, thereby lubing them. I learned this from a machinist at a NAPA I used to work near.

Success! Now all you need is time! Oh, and a new battery.

Well I got it all together today. Except the exhaust, waiting on new studs for that. It fired right over on starting fluid. The battery was too weak to keep trying. Even with my truck hooked to it. I'm going to take that into work tomorrow to charge it. I took the old distributor apart to use in my drill to prime the engine. I dont know how long you're supposed to do it, but I want about 45 seconds. I took the oil filter back off and there was a small amount of oil in it. So, at least it's pumping now. I watched a few online videos that said it can take up to 5 minutes to prime up to the rockers. I'll probably take the distributor back out tomorrow and let it spin for a good while. 20181206_132012.jpg

Five minutes? Are they kidding? If you don't have good flow to the rocker arms in two minutes max, you have a wiped-out bearing on the crank or cam, so you might as well stop there. And if you replace the oil pump, you have to prime it first before the install, in order for it to create suction immediately.

And, of course, the vacuum advance points in the opposite direction of rotor rotation.

Well, I dont see any way to prime this pump before install due to type it is. The only other way I could think to prime it would be to remove one of the oil pressure sensors and prime it with an oil pressure tank. I don't have one of those. I'll just have the ride sit in the jeep with the key on and watch the gauge. I'll spin it up to pressure and keep on it for a minute or so.

As long as the dizzy is properly engaged to the pump drive and properly meshed to the cam drive gear, that will also work.

Well, it took about 75 seconds to get oil up to the pump, but once it got there it hasn't drained out. As soon as the oil got up to the pump it about ripped the drill out of my hand. I want expecting that. Now that oil is in the pump, I'm having a heck of a time lining the oil pump drive back up with the dizzy. I guess it's not spinning as freely to turn that extra degree or so when the dizzy gear hits it. Been trying for some time now and going to keep after it I guess. Real pita.

Got the dizzy in, runs on starting fluid, not pumping fuel. Off with the pump again.

Didn't have to take the pump off, I just wasn't patient enough. I pulled the pump outlet line and ran it again on starting fluid. After 30 seconds or so, I got fuel. I reconnected it all and ran it again on the fluid. After 30 seconds or so, it stayed running on it's own.

    It's a good day.

Well, I took the battery out of my 07 dodge diesel truck and it fits the battery try and hold down, but just by the nubbins. Factory spec is 440cca, so a nice new 850cca group 65 ought to work just fine. It had that starter cranking nice and strong!

Maiden voyage today. We went 5 miles or so. She drove, of course. She loves it. 20181213_145508.jpg
There are still some finishing items left. 4x4 and HVAC vacuum is not hooked up yet, and still need a battery. Rear window track needs repair, and a few interior bits need repair. But, it runs, drives, stops, and has heat.

We? I only see her. Is that sinister smile hinting on how she disposed of you already? :nailbiting: She doesen't look as mean as you made her out to be. In any case, not the type who would send you to the dog house, only because the Jeep won't run

I haven't been disposed of yet. She can be pretty mean when she needs to be. Fortunately, she likes it!

I'm going to flush the cooling system, put a new battery in it, and adjust the timing and carb. Then it's ready to go.
