let the teardown continue folks......today I took out the rear side glass on both sides being careful not to damage it as that is obsolete.....man was the weatherstripping a pain in the rear to take out but that is where a steady handy and patience comes in....found out that the pillars are more rotten on the back than I anticipated.....can definetly find a replacement roof skin as the 2 dr and 4 dr wagons are the same....the problem is going to be in the pillars as the 4 dr pillar is further back because of the extra door on both sides....so my plan will be to duplicate the rotten pillars with new sheet metal and then do a roof reskin using a donor roof

The 2 door pillars are in the same location for the front doors? I would have thought the 2-door openings would be further back.

Gotta hand it to you, that's determination. Don't know if I would have been stopped dead, right there.:thumbs2:

from what I was told by someone else the B pillar is further back on the 2 dr wagons but the A,C,and D pillars are the same.......I am going to be looking at the comet wagons and also '60-'65 falcon wagons as they are compatible pillar wise

today I talked to Donnie over at unique ford salvage over in Orlando,FL and looked at his wagons.....all of the wagons had the same issues as mine so this is not going to be an option...he did have a steering wheel that I am looking at but he was asking $75 and it would need to be restored and repainted....got my rear side glass weatherstripping in from Falcon parts today so I can take it over to John for the other falcon 2 dr wagon I have that is being restored....but on the brighter side of the roof situation I got an email from a member on ford forums that might have a roof for me.....waiting to get an answer and see if it is a yay or nay

I might have a donor roof in the making....it is a '63 4 dr wagon...see what you think....the only thing that I would have to do is handle the extra post but it looks pretty good!

Yeah, that looks perfect. I forgot how inset the pillars are from the roof edge. Is there anything you can do to slow down the rust from happening again? Some coating that can take the welding heat? I thought I knew of one, but I don't.

I think using por-15 might work as that is what they usually use to keep the cancer from growing back

Yeah, but how do you get it inside?

I was just refreshing my utility trailer and found that the factory forgot the drain holes in 3 of the 6 posts with open ends. Full of mud and stones that I hauled for the driveway and garden. The square tubing is about 3/32" thick X 1-1/4" square. I drilled them out at the bottom and chopped up a coat hanger to make an 18" 'drill' to swish the muck out. I'm thinking I'll use the same drill with a swab full of undercoating and coat the inside walls, then use a plastic furniture glide to plug it up. I guess you'd have some openings to pass something inside to coat the pillars.

For you, in Florida, I guess the salty, humid air is what wrecks the sheetmetal, right?

I wonder if there's a gaseous type of rust coating that you could release into the pillars? POR 15 is pretty thick and the nozzles on the spray cans can be aimed very well. About the only other thing that I can think of is that insulation spray foam that expands inside the cavity. It's inert and wouldn't let any air pass inside. Just a thought.

Found something that will keep the rust off, AFTER you do your resto, even in Salty Sea Air!!!

This is one my Xmas Gift list to the wife.
    http://www.counteractrust.com/

Magazine articles, including one called RV Florida.
    http://www.counteractrust.com/what others.htm

It's sold up here for our roadsalt issues. Been around since 1993. Australian product made for their high-salt content country.
    http://www.counteractrust.com.au/

and different looking site in Canada:
    http://www.counteractrust.ca/

This is their online store. I clicked on Classic Cars. For $350 plus $10 shipping, that's a winner!
    http://www.goestores.com/tabular.aspx?Merchant=impactmarketingsystemsinc&DeptID=204581

The other thing I found is a 3-part Rust cleaning and protection system, but it's not a longterm solution (eg: 10 to 50 years).

Everyone knows about ZeroRust, so I'll post the link anyway:
    http://zero-rust.com/auto.html

Here's an article on one of these 3-part systems:
    http://www.motorcyclecruiser.com/tech/rust_removal/index.html

    And the product site:
    http://www.rusteco.com/

    Here's another:
    http://www.kbs-coatings.com/

This also sells rust protection, but the tech information is news to me:
    http://www.belzona.com/articles/Metal-Rust-Protection-Types.aspx

    http://www.belzona.com/articles/Metal-Rust-Protection-Methods.aspx

I like this site! Graphical rust protection product selector:
    http://www.zerust.com/select_protectionlevel

I hit the top RH bar and got this, but you should have a look and choose your priorities. The second bar might relate more to your environment:
    http://www.zerust.com/product/environment/1/show/20.html

    Here's their main page:
    http://www.zerust.com/

With all the work you're doing to really restore it, and Florida's constant salt-air issues, POR-15 would give you maybe 10 years before you needed another coating. Maybe. The little beast will deserve some extra TLC, to keep that Rust Mushroom in check, IMO.

Hope all this stuff helps. I wonder what a Minty 1965 Falcon Wagon would sell for in 20 years?;) More than I can afford, that's for sure.

Have pity on an old man (less than Job anyway) :rofl2:

I had this link and forgot how it related to all your good work. You don't own a long rifle do you? Ah, heck, you're close to Miami, Florida, not Miami, Manitoba.:whew:

New sheetmetal parts for your Falcon? :hide: :hide:

    http://www.showcars-bodyparts.com/falcon.html

One of the guys from Europe was asking about a fender for his '57 chevy wagon, and I said to myself, "Self, what about that 1965 Falcon resto!" So I girded up what's left of my loins and posted the site page for ya!:rofl2:
