1977 Plymouth Fury Station Wagon -engine

hi all.. i took my wagon in to finally get tranny rebuilt ( 904 torqueflight ) all the years i had it i always was knowing it was a 360 cu in engine, but today the tranny guy told me the engine is actually a 400..
i said that can't be, he said it is.. it is stamped on the block..

my question is , whats the difference ( visually ) between the 360 and 400
and where do i find proof of it on the engine, i never seen anywhere that the wagons had 400's

No pics needed. Big block Mopars have the dizzy up front on the engine, at a 60* angle. SB Mopars are on the rear of the engine, standing straight up.

 

ok, but which is which ? mine has distributor in the rear, ( 360) but my mechanic says it is a 400

 

go online and look up your vin codes. They will tell you what you have.

If the dizzy's in back, it's definitely NOT a 400. I had a '75 Cordoba (with the green Corinthian leather) that had the Lean-Burn 400, and the dizzy was up front. The mechanic was incorrectly showing off.

 

thanks for the info, but he says he is (Supposedly) mopar man..says the engine size is stamped right above the starter housing.
but my distributor is in the back and vin # verifys it.
do i am gonna go over to him and see this so called number on the block and then see if there is a chart for it like the vin numbers... anyone got a link for such thing ?

 

ok,, i could not resist i went to the garage where they are working on my car, i looked at the number on the block.
i know it is a 360cu in , but he said he goes by the beginning numbers. i don't know what he means..
the number on block is 4006830-360-8 not sure what 1st 5 numbers mean..but the rest any dummy can figure out.
also he pointed out that that the torque converter hub was busted as i suspected, mine has the single piece weight on it.
but i could swear many years go before previous rebuild that it had a 2 pc weights on it. he said that the 904 for my vehicle used the 1pc weight.
anyone have any insight on this ? thanks..

 

If he cannot correctly ID a Mopar engine (What do I know? I'm a Ford guy *rolls eyes*), can you trust what he says about the flexplate balance? There has to be someone well-versed in Mopar to know what's what.

 

318 torque converters are NOT balanced 360's ARE balanced. I have seen them with various weights on them singles and
doubles. IF yours had more than 1 there should be evidence of it like a floater free flying weight in the bell housing, since it IS enclosed, (unless cover was left off on the bottom). OR spot weld marks near the weight that's still there. If he claims to be a "Mopar guy" and CAN NOT ID a mopar engine (big or small block) simply by location of the distributor he is full of shit.

 

i have seen 2 styles of converters, a single large weight or 2 small weights.
does anyone know which one is for the 904 connected to a 360?
i'm starting to regret going to this guy.. sigh..

 

You are hung up on weights. Anything that is balanced is just like a tire. The weights are not always the same size, nor in the same location. You use the one that the manufacturer calls for in your application......just make sure it's for your correct engine.

 

that's what i am asking,, which converter is it supposed to have.., because i am afraid he is might order the wrong one..
he said he is ordering one for a 400 cu.in.
is the 360 and 400 converters the same..?

 

NO a 400 will have a 727 trans NOT a 904 at least I have never seen a 904 behind a 400 and the cogs that drive the pump are completely different. You need a 360 torque converter for a 904

 

that's what i figured.. i know mine is a non locking..
i am beginning to regret taking the car there... i am gonna go there tomorrow and make sure he gets the right one..

 

BTW, the body buck tag itself should say what was installed at the factory.
