That ‘73 Olds seems like the perfect type candidate for a running project car. I totally agree with Orthmann. It’s good to have a runner while you do the most needed things and tick down your list, till you wind up with a really nice car. The problem with a complete project is where to start first. I had a car friend that bought a ‘57 Lincoln that was a complete pile. First thing he did? Spent $1,100 to powder coat and paint the wheels. DUMB. But a lot of people wind up in a situation where you don’t know where to begin. Good luck with your hunt. The other thing is if you have a project runner you feel good about what you’re doing to it, rather than throwing money at something that could take quite a few resource $$$ to get it even to turn, then you get disgruntled working on it.
The way you make it sound is if a frame-off restoration was what the Lincoln needed. The Polara, being a Unibody, is in need of a totally different approach. Depending on the amount of rot, there are advantages and disadvantages to both types of vehicle body types, depending. Powder coating the wheels on a terminal Rustbucket seems like an automotive way of imaginarilly clothing the emporer, just before the subject Lemmings begin jumping off of the cliff. The time lapse between doing something like that and surrender shouldn't have been long waiting. It's always best to have a detailed plan, first
Well the Lincoln wasn’t a total heap. But there were things that certainly should have happened in a different sequence. It would have been nice to have a running car to move those pretty pink wheels around, which after spending $1,100 he painted the wrong color. Is it possible to have a wrong detailed plan?
