You should reach out to him. He has been talking a bit about increasing it and I don’t want to misquote it.
I am considering it, as my poor Ranchero has spotty rust issues, in the cab roof and floor, the bed floor and sides, the quarter panel ends (with accident damage) and the upper right quarter panel.
Work for today is over, the suspension has been transferred over. Tomorrow comes the task of stripping the remaining undercoating around the old frame. Then epoxy prime and raptor liner.
Not only is removing undercoating rough and time consuming. Occasionally you discover a few surprises. As the kids say hashtag #overit.
While I had done a lot of the work before hand it still took every night this week to finish cleaning up the underside. Friday was the final wipe down and epoxy prime this morning started the seam sealer and this afternoon the raptor gun finally came out and she is coated stem to stern.
Body is all bolted back down and the car is safe and sound at home! Bought a 6r80 transmission this week to back up the old FE.
Dang, that's a fat-@$$ed transmission! And it's going behind the 390? You should make sure it has a good-sized fluid cooler, separate from the radiator cooler, for it. These transmissions live on the knife-edge of temperature (around 170°F is about as high as you'll want to go with Mercon V/LV.
Yeah it is a bit hefty. It’s the 2wd version of the trans in my F150. And at 180k it’s still going strong. These transmissions are well know for their stock power ratings with many a high power mustangs beating on them in stock form. Plus they are very plentiful and cheap. LKQ had 6 pages of transmissions ranging from 600-900 with anywhere from 80k-250k. Several folks have done this swap in vintage and modern muscle cars without any massaging of the tunnel. I have included some pics with measurements I was shocked to see it is 11 inches shorter than my c6 and at the 23 inch mark it is 2 inches wider at 9 vs 7 however the 6r80 has 2 ears that if removed would gain back almost 1.5 inches. Where it seems to carrry most of its girth is below the input/output centerline at an estimated 4-5 inches deeper on the 6r80, it is equal if not a bit lighter than the c6 though.
