I just wanted to show all of you a customer's car I worked on when I was working; '63 with a 260-2V/Fordomatic 2-speed, all original and gorgeous:
Very pretty. Have often wondered about those two speeds... seems like it might be lacking in the get up and go. mike
The Ford-O-Matic 2 speed was a major deterrent to any kind of spirited driving. Even more so than the Powerglide. I had a '64 Falcon Sprint with the 260 (added a 4bbl and dual exhaust) with a 3.25:1 rear and the Fondue-O-Matic just killed the package.
Sloooow Worse than a Powerglide??????? Wouldn't you rather drive a Buick with Dynaflow? Or a Chrysler with fluid drive?
Not this one. I put a Pertronix unit in it, and when I went to test drive it, I stomped the gow pedal and once First grabbed, it was gone, long gone. 2100 2-barrel, also.
If you think about it, most cars of the early and mid sixties were relatively slow by today's standards and no matter if you had a 2 speed or 3 speed automatic or a 4 speed manual your final drive ratio was 1 to 1.
My first car had fluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuid driiiiiiive. If the final drive on it was 1 to 1 it took one mile to get it up to the speed limit, and that was in town.
