Caster angle controls directional stability and aids in self centering. It keeps the wheels aimed straight until enough force from the steering linkage overcomes their want to stay straight.

A good analogy for caster is the motorcycle. Long raked front forks allow a bike to cruise straight down the road and absorb bumps easily. But they don't turn worth a crap. Race bikes have forks almost straight up allowing them to maneuver quickly but bumps are like hitting a curb straight on and without dampers are prone to tank slappers.

As an aside, both roads and vehicles have the camber set so that if an emergency occurs, the vehicle will gradually veer towards the shoulder rather than into oncoming traffic. Your car should never go straight down the road if you remove your hands from the wheel.

It is the crown of the road should guide your car to the shoulder with your hands of the wheel. Roads are never flat, so that water will run off. On a divided highway, in the left lane, your car should drift towards the left shoulder. Otherwise you will be fighting the steering all the time, not to mention wearing tires very quickly.

So Eagle Freek did you get a new steering U-joint or get the old one hooked up correctly?
Now I'm concerned about the two farm impliment type on our 1941 Ford with the Nova clip. Never did trust it.
I've never been sure which is more important, steering or brakes. At least with steering you can try to turn to avoid an accident when the brakes go out.

Yes, I drilled a hole through both shafts and installed a bolt with a locknut. I still can't for the life of me, figure out how it happened.
