No Reserve: Collection of Seven Schwinn Sting-Ray Krate Bicycles for sale on BaT Auctions - ending April 16 (Lot #238,108) | Bring a Trailer As a kid of the 70's this was the coolest Bike out there. The one the rich kids had these. I had a yellow Huffy version. Any of you guys of this era have one, or knew a friend that did?
My younger brother had one of these, an Orange Krate, back in the day. Very cool bike. We loved the shock absorbers in the rear and the spring in the front.
I, of course, was too cool to want such a "small" bike. I wanted something "full-size." In 1973, at age 16, with money earned from my paper route, I bought a Raleigh Super Course. Cost $167. What's really cool is that I still have this bicycle now 53 years later. It's shows a little wear now, but, hey, it's been with me through thick and thin. Even now, as I approach 70 years of age, I still get out on it once in a while, usually taking my granddaughter to a local park with several nice bike trails. On the center post below the seat is the sticker I had to put on it in order to be able to park in the bicycle rack at college. Dated 1978-79. I plan to be buried with it.
Mine was a Mustang three speed, orange with coaster brake. As kids we beat the crap out of our bikes.
Due to a lack of storage space, I took it apart. Here's a close-up of that controversial generator they cal The Angel of Light, that is, if they meant previous to it becoming a fallen angel. Lucas electrics were notorious Prince of Darknesses, given their reputation for being unreliable. As you can see, it's Swiss made and is said to even been produced with ball bearings, instead of the usual bronze bushings all others use. Notice the service screw for maintenance oiling. The headlamp is also a Lucifer. I don't know where it ended up. But, it's there. I'm debating on what to do with these. They're of high quality. So, I really don't want to dispose of these. But then again, I don't want these to end up with someone who will collect these for religious cult reasons by those types who are into Doom Metal "music", for example. If someone's restoring a bicycle that originally had these items, then I suppose that would be acceptable. Back then, while I was modifying this bicycle, the intention was to create a sort of horror bike themed after club biker choppers. These items aren't original to this bicycle. As far as I can remember, there wasn't any lighting, when I got it. These items were removed from a Swiss army bike which had an unusually thick frame. The only thing I have left from it is the front luggage rack
