It didn't give up it's heart easily but it's out. It used to take me about an hour and a half to get my 2.3 turbo engine out of my Mustang and once a buddy and I took a 302 out of a Mustang II in 35 minutes. This one kicked my arse. However it is out. Time for the fun part cleaning up the mess and getting the new long block in there. But it will be after I get the tranny back from a friend of mine who is putting in a shift kit. The "new" engine is the bottom end from my 81 that had 90K miles on it. It's got a new Comp Cam, lifters and timing set. Also installed is a Jeep 4.0L head on the AMC 4.2L block. It will be getting an intake and exhaust from a 99 Jeep and the fuel injection will be ran by Megasquirt.

Do you feel like a dentist or a one-armed bandit?:rofl2:Root canal from a reluctant candidate.

Can't believe that AMC could pack so much under that hood.:whew:

More like a proctologist. It was a messy job.

Was there a problem for AMC getting a V8 to fit with the AWD running gear? Because I know the old Hornet (same basic structure) could be had with the little 304 V8 and the 360........

No, there are a couple guys at least with V8's and they fit fine. I think AMC prefered to used straight 6's as much as they could.
