hey yall just joined up here. im tackling a project here a 79 olds custom cruiser. bodys in great shape a a sbc 307 in it atm. im thinking when i get the 350 out of my truck if i can put my transfer case and tranny in as well and have a highway gear and a racing gear... im not looking for a huge racer im more of a cruiser . anyways how hard do u think it will b t make the transfer case fit?
you know i was wanting to do the same thing once even got as far as taking the transfer case off and cutting off the ear for the front shaft, welded a two piece plate on to seal it. couldnt figure a way around the cross member mount being so high though. however they do make an overdrive and an under drive unit just for what you are talking about. they used to sell them in jcw in the r/v motorhome section.
Are you talking about using your low range on the street? I installed a 2 speed transfer case in my Eagle and in low range I can probably go 25MPH max. I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish.
I think your engine is a 307 Olds, not a small block Chevy. You'll find the engine change alone will involve mount changes, wiring changes ad lots of other stuff. I think you'd find an easier route would be to replace the 3 speed with a 4 speed 200-4R transmission from a 1984 or later model. That, along with a rear axle ratio change will produce a marked improvement.
its a sbc 307 the previous owner did the swap i think the 200-4r is the better was to go just having a hard time finding one lol
The 700-R4 is easier to find. Trans-dapt sells an adapter to bolt one to a BOP engine if that's what you want.
I would suggest and agree w/ the others, a four spead auto-tranny with a locking torque converter, like a tried-and-true 700-r4, driving a deeper geared rear-end would be a very good route to get where you are wanting to go. Transfer cases are heavy and would be really geared too low for race applications. Although, working in a transfer case and front end to build a four wheel drive wagon would be cool.
