I lost the screws that go in my luggage rack. They are a 1/4-20 thread size, but all of the 1/4-20 screws I find have a head that is too large to fit into the recessed holes on the luggage rack.

I know people buy these and install them all the time. My car is a '71 Pontiac wagon. Where have you guys found these screws?

The head needs to be around 1/4 inch in diameter, but all the ones I find are 1/2 inch.

Brandon, I'm out of town at the moment, but when I get home Thursday afternoon, I will locate my luggage rack screws and take a pic. And Friday, I will go to a nut and bolt supply nearby and find some for you...they have everything. You probably need fresh Well-Nuts as well. 10 in all if I'm remembering correctly.

Thanks, Wixom. My well nuts are a bit smashed from age, but I have not tried to remove them because I have been afraid I would get myself in a mess that I wish I had just left alone. Will the old ones just pull out, even if they're old? I was afraid they may have spread out inside the roof and wouldn't come out.

I can't understand why these screws are so hard to find. I thought FOR SURE McMaster Carr would have them, but from what I have seen on their website they don't have any options when it comes to the head size. This is really frustrating because I remember bagging and labeling these screws and typically I don't lose things like this because I find it so frustrating, but I guess somewhere between my house, dad's barn and barn loft and all the places I've had to haul the car around they escaped.

If your Well-Nuts are intact and you've already done your paint, I would leave well enough alone.

It is so frustrating to lose screws and such when you know you were trying to be careful, but on a big project something is always bound to go missing. Oh, and the real fun thing is, you will come across these lost screws soon after finding replacements! For sure! :slap:

The screw is in the Poncho parts catalog.
I had trouble finding it until I figured out that "panel" means roof.
71-73 all B station wagons, part number 9428175, oval head cross recess machine screw 1/4-20 x 1-1/8, ten required. It doesn't say if it's chrome or stainless, others for the rack are chrome. An oval head screw has a taper on the bottom of the head and the head is slightly rounded. The Olds catalog calls them oval trim head machine screws. Interior oval head trim screws have smaller than normal heads and in woodworking applications trim screws have small heads but that's about all I know.

They have those screws in stainless by the box on evilbay.
The closest size is 1-1/4" but you can always cut off an eighth.
Try a marine supply/boat place, they usually have screws like that in stainless or solid brass.
Any good commercial hardware store should have them too.

The only ones I can find on ebay have a .5" head, which is too large. That is the only size I can find at McMaster-Carr, the local Fastenall or any of the local hardware stores.

    What is the Poncho Catalog?

Thanks for the part numbers, I've been trying to track some down with that, if not, hopefully Wixom's magic store can come up with some.

I mentioned that I tried McMaster Carr earlier. I didn't call them, but I checked their website.

Wagon Killer, if you have some of these screws I think I might hug you.
