Filed under: Sedan, Wagon, Government/Legal, Crossover, Hatchback, Subaru A recently filed lawsuit in federal court against Subaru of America and its parent Fuji Heavy Industries claims that several recent models burn an excessive amount of oil. The case, which is seeking class-action status, covers examples of the 2011-2014 Forester, 2013 Legacy and 2013 Outback with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and the 2012-2013 Impreza and 2013 XV Crosstrek with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The suit alleges that Subaru knew about the excessive oil consumption but didn't fix the problem, according to USA Today. It contends that owners have to spend an unreasonable amount of money to keep these models topped up with Texas tea, and that the people represented wouldn't have bought the vehicle if they had known that this could happen. As proof of Subaru's knowledge of excessive oil use, the lawsuit cites four technical service bulletins from the company telling dealers about the issue, although, that would seem to partially invalidate the claim that the automaker hasn't attempted to fix things. The case was filed on behalf of two men, one with a 2014 Forester and the other with a 2013 Outback. "Following an extensive investigation, we now look forward to litigating the case," said Matthew Schelkopf, an attorney for the plaintiffs, to USA Today. Autoblog reached out to Subaru of America for its response. "We're aware of the suit. We believe the oil use in our vehicles is in acceptable levels. We have worked with customers on this issue," said company spokesperson Michael McHale.Subaru facing class-action suit over excess oil use originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 22 Jul 2014 16:01:00 EST. I'd like to know that also? There is some more info in this link witch mentions some costly repairs and "unanticipated wear of the oil control piston rings as the root cause of the oil consumption defect," http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2014/07/18/subaru-oil-burner-lawsuit/12859865/ I all ways think of the black lung specials when worn piston rings are mentioned. Yet I don't think I've ever seen a Subaru coughing out smoke...?
Years ago it was normal to see cars smoking blue/black. But I rarely see even semis smoking now. Still the parking lots are covered with leaking oil. Seems odd they mention oil use yet there is no mention of how much or how often they need topped off.
I worked for a Subaru dealer for about 10 years until last year. Over the past 2-3 years Subaru started to use synthetic oil and in some cars I think it was 0/20 weight. With the cars using synthetic from the factory also came the oil use complaints. Before that no complaints at all. It says some where in the owners manual that having to add oil in the 800-1,000 mile range is normal. My 2000 Outback with 273,000 miles doesn't use oil at all and neither does my 1997 Wagon with 180,000 miles. Both cars get the oil changed every 3,000 miles with normal, boring non synthetic oil. J
I got hooked on synthetic oil in my cars and my truck for awhile. Went back to regular motor oil which could have been a problem. Lucky I never have to add oil to anything I drive. Just change every 3000 miles or so. I'm beginnng to think this synthetic oil thing is like the modern crappy gas. Just a way to get more money from the car owners. For some reason parking lots still have those black spots just like in the 50's. This 800-1,000 mile range was normal back in the flat head and old straight six and eight days. But not now considering what those cars cost. At least back then a young guy in a uniform would check your oil and add a quart while you got fuel. Try finding motor oil at your friendly gas stop today while standing in line behind a dozen people buying lotto tickets and beer!
They BUY beer where you are? Over here, you can wait in line to buy gas, snacks, or lottery tickets, and watch people go to the beer cooler, grab 2 30 packs, and walk out the door with them. Circle K policy is immediate termination, if you try to stop them, or even yell at them. I've never used synthetic oil, and I don't have any engines that go thru oil. That said, I've never owned a Subaru, either.
I've heard that too. But I'm an old white guy. I'd be strip searched, cuffed and stuffed, before I got the beer in my car. Our local Circle K stations have been sold to people wearing towels so the names have been changed. I've been hearing how great Subaru engines are. A couple guys are thinking about putting one in an old UltraVan RV.
I have the same afliction as you. I'm an old white guy. And you did interpret what I said exactly correct.
I really hate to write things like that. We don't discriminate. Have many friends from everywhere. But sadly we seem to be the minority now when it comes to laws.
From one old white guy to another I understand what you are saying. We are however paying for the beer that is stolen because we are responsible and work. And I just ordered a 2015 Outback but it will have a 6. Salesman tried to talk me into a 4 cyl but I explained how I like to waste gas
