Hello All! I recently purchased a 1985 Eagle Wagon for the heck of it...... Actually I have a goal. I had a AMC Gremlin with a Amc 401 shoehorned into it and decided to build a eagle. The Gremlin was sold without the 401 and it will be put in the Eagle. I am going to keep the Eagle as stock appearing as I can and it will just be street driven after the swap. Other than the horribly faded woodgrain the body is in excellent shape and has very little surface rust to speak of. Woodgrain will be fixed first. Anyway....... Here's a pic.. pay no attention to my neighbors tree that is about to fall on my New truck..
Great idea. I like the Eagle wagons. Making one go very fast should be great fun and make a neat sleeper. Looking forward to seeing your progress pics. And of course glad you found the Forums.
Welcome dsrt4! Good looking Eagle! I like those, and yours will be very cool! Glad you joined up! David PS. Move your pretty truck before it gets it's own woodgrain!
Welcome to the forum. There's a guy here named 'CadiPacer' that you will want to talk to. Guess what he owns?
I like those Eagles. Looks like you are venturing into a fun project. I hope cadipacer wades in here. He has TONS of experience with AMC rigs and different engine swaps. Good luck and keep us updated!
Nice Eagle, there dsrt4. You'll be able to soar with the best of them once the 401's in there. Should be a fun car and I'm glad you're keeping it stock looking. I'm sure there will be a few muscle car drivers scratching their head when all they'll see are your taillights in front of them pulling away from a light. Good luck with the install. Pretty hot looking truck you got there as well.
Thanks Everyone! I just recently recieved my Woodgrain sheets and will tackle that project the first nice day we get. Im not really looking forward to that
It's probably be a pita, but you're going to be so happy you did it once it's done. It'll make a huge difference, I'm sure.
Its patience work. Try the hotgun to remove the old one, in some discreet spot. If that works, you'll have an easier time of it. If it doesn't, it'll take some time, with paint stipper (gel type) and rags and rubber gloves, etc. Post some pics as you go through it. I didn't have a camera when I did mine, but I haven't seen a good DIY picumentary on the NET about removing it either. Just putting it on: http://www.rickwrench.com/index79master.htm?http://www.rickwrench.com/wood.html http://www.rickwrench.com/index79master.htm?http://www.rickwrench.com/falconalldone.html If you want to, you can email Rick (above links) and he might help with tips for removal, but you'll find a lot of posts about that here too. Just use the Search menu here and type in Woodgrain. Also, try to get a day when its sort of grey and not too windy or cooler than 65F. The wind dries the paint stripper too fast when removing. Harsh, hot sunlight will dry it too fast also. If its much cooler, the new stuff won't shape as well and may cause a lot more air bubbles while you're applying it before the hotgun procedures (final step, usually). Good luck.
I have tried the heat gun and so far it isn't working. The vinyl has deteriorated down to the last Substrate and the gun does not work. I have found the 3m vinyl remover and it seems to help but its pricey and it is going to take a bunch to get it off..
I'm surprised the heat gun doesn't work....don't get it TOO hot. The 3M stuff is good but you also may want to try the 3M adhesive remover. It wont hurt the paint but I always try to contain it anyway.
