Hi Guys, I am getting ready to install my new gas tank in my 1986 Pontiac Parisienne Wagon. The tank is a perfect reproduction, exact fit. So, here is my question...It came with a new filler neck. The neck slides pretty deep into the tank, but what keeps the filler neck from leaking, and how is it permanently attached? They don't offer a rubber seal, and it looks like the original one is actually welded or soldered on. Do I have to solder the new seam? Any info would be greatly appreciated. You can email me at wayneadam@ptd.net Thanks,Wayne PS...I got the Spectra Premium tank from Rock Auto online. Awsome tank made in Canada.
Hi Wayne. I can't answer your question rite now about the filler neck on your wagon, Best I could do unless someone chimes in is I can look at my 82 full size GM at my barn tomorrow or Sunday to see whats up with the filler neck considering they are the same wagon from windshield back...... my 87 daily driver is on propane so no help there. I find it kinda od IMO that the neck would be fixed on the GM ( But I don't know:confused, my 72 Merc has a rubber seal as you describe. BTW, thanks for info on where you got your new gas tank, I have not looked it up yet but I'm sure it will come in handy if not for myself but others.
Hey Wayne, if I am understanding correctly (I am a few beers in reading this) but they should have a rubber collar with clamps to hold it on. I bought one last year from them for my '77 Chevy c-10 I had at the time and it was a great quality direct fit replacement. Good luck and keep us posted how it turns out!
1tireman Thanks for your input. My mechanic friend said he thought that a rubber seal should be used, which I could understand, but there is no way a clamp could be used. Also, none of the tanks and necks are even offered with the seal as additional hardware.........Wayne
Some G.M. tanks have the soldered or welded necks on them. Some tanks are also available both ways, with and without the neck. You save a couple of bucks by removing the neck from one tank and transferring it to the new one yourself. It was that way on a buddy's 82 Cutlass Supreme sedan, for example. Whether the B-Body wagons are done that way, I have no idea. On the Fords, there is a rubber seal that supports the tank end of the neck, and it is held into the tank at the top, by being bolted to the body. Different companies do these things different ways, but they all seem to work.
On my 55 Chevys there is a short rubber hose, like radiator hose material, clamped onto the tank. On other cars I've had a rubber ring is inserted where the filler goes into the tank. Somewhere you should find photos of your type tank.
At the bottom of this page is your gas tank, says filler neck installed. Does not say how it's installed though but kinda looks like it's a solid connection (welded/soldered) as I don't see any clamps etc, etc. http://www.shepherdautoparts.com/gas_fuel_tank/pontiac/parisienne/1986.html ???, if you do have to weld it in, make sure you get it dead on rite!
Thanks guys I am going to solder it on. As far as getting it in the exact correct position, that part is easy... Just put both tanks against a flat wall. Measure the distance from the wall to the filler end, and adjust the new one to that distance. Thanks again....Wayne
